This is not just shiraz - this is Langi shiraz. Grown on the estate’s revered Old Block, planted in 1969 at the foot of the Great Dividing Range, this wine has long been a benchmark for cool-climate Australian shiraz. And in 2021, it’s absolutely singing. This might just be the most awarded wine we've ever had the pleasure of offering.

Why do we love this wine?

Inky black in the glass with flashes of deep garnet, the nose leads with potent blackberries and black cherry, backed-up by complex spice. There’s a streak of rhubarb and redcurrant threading through, adding both lift and detail. The palate is mesmerising. A wash of dense, dark fruit flows through finely sculpted tannins, bolstered by 16 months in French barrique (50% new). Silky and lithe but never shy, it layers blackberry, dark plum, liquorice, smoked meat, pepper, cocoa and dried herbs effortlessly. That spine of fresh acidity and minerality gives it a sense of movement and momentum that’s rare and utterly captivating. It’s drinking beautifully now with a good decant, but has the bones and energy to cruise through to 2044 and beyond.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

" Grown on the estate's 'Old Block' of shiraz vines, planted in 1969. It spent 16 months in French oak barriques (50% new). It's a magnificent release. It's fluid, elegant and controlled but, just a bit, it also stamps its feet and says: the world is mine. It's awash with cherry/plum, peanut shell, black pepper and floral flavours, and it's both silken to the touch, and (super) long through the finish. This is a wine. Drink by 2044. 98 Points." - Campbell Mattinson, Halliday Wine Companion

Frequently Asked Questions

This 2021 Langi Shiraz has achieved remarkable critical acclaim, earning 98 points from multiple respected critics and being named Tyson Stelzer's Shiraz of the Year. The wine's exceptional quality stems from Mount Langi Ghiran's mastery of the Grampians terroir, where cool climate conditions and ancient volcanic soils create ideal conditions for producing structured, age-worthy Shiraz. The 16 months in French barrique (50% new) adds complexity without overwhelming the pure fruit expression that defines great Australian Shiraz.

The Grampians region, located in western Victoria, is renowned for producing some of Australia's most elegant and structured Shiraz wines. The high altitude and cool climate create longer ripening periods, allowing the grapes to develop complex flavours while retaining natural acidity - evident in this wine's 'spine of fresh acidity and minerality'. The ancient volcanic soils contribute to the wine's distinctive earthy undertones and mineral backbone, setting Grampians Shiraz apart from warmer climate expressions with its combination of power and finesse.

This wine's rich, complex profile with notes of blackberry, dark plum, smoked meat, and pepper makes it an ideal match for robust dishes. The silky tannins and earthy undertones pair beautifully with grilled lamb, beef roasts, or game meats, while the spice elements complement dishes with herbs like rosemary or thyme. The wine's minerality and acidity also make it suitable for aged cheeses or dishes with mushrooms, where the earthy flavours create harmonious combinations.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with proper decanting, its exceptional structure suggests it will continue evolving until 2044 and beyond. The wine's finely sculpted tannins, fresh acidity, and mineral backbone provide the framework for long-term ageing, during which the intense fruit flavours will integrate further with the oak and develop additional complexity. For immediate enjoyment, decant for at least an hour to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full spectrum of flavours.

Langtons Classification is Australia's most prestigious wine ranking system, recognising wines that have consistently demonstrated exceptional quality, collectibility, and market performance over time. Mount Langi Ghiran's inclusion in this classification places it among Australia's most sought-after wines, indicating not only current excellence but also proven track record for ageing gracefully. This status reflects the wine's position as a benchmark Australian Shiraz, with the consistency and quality that serious collectors and wine enthusiasts seek.
