What happens when one of the world's most recognisable Champagne houses turn their hand to Central Otago pinot? Good things, obviously! We'll be honest, we didn't see this coming, but now that we're on the second vintage - we're completely stoked that it's here.

Why do we love this wine?

The first still wine from an utterly iconic, but apparently shy, Champagne house. This crew have access to some of the best pinot noir grapes in the entire world - Champagne is a part of Burgundy after all - it speaks volumes to the quality of the fruit that this famous producer decided to come half way around the world just to get their hands on the good stuff, Central Otago pinot. The wine is highly regional and varietal with a complex mouthfeel and flavours of black cherry, plum, graphite and forest floor. A subtle hint of French oak and silky tannins prolong the finish and send you back for another sip before you've even finished your first. This one's an absolute cracker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Central Otago's unique continental climate and schist soils create ideal conditions for pinot noir that even legendary Champagne producers can't ignore. The region's dramatic temperature variations between day and night preserve acidity while developing complex flavours, producing fruit quality that rivals Burgundy itself. For Mumm to venture halfway around the world speaks to Central Otago's reputation as one of the world's premier pinot noir regions.

While Mumm's Champagne showcases pinot noir's elegance through sparkling wine production, this still wine reveals the grape's full textural complexity and earthy character. The same attention to fruit quality that makes their Champagne exceptional translates beautifully to still wine, but here you experience the raw power and terroir expression that sparkling production would otherwise mask. It's fascinating to taste how the same producer interprets pinot noir across completely different winemaking philosophies.

The 2022 vintage in Central Otago delivered exceptional balance between ripeness and freshness, crucial for premium pinot noir. Cool spring conditions followed by a warm, dry summer allowed for extended hang time, developing the complex flavours of black cherry and forest floor notes found in this wine. The vintage's natural acidity structure provides the backbone that supports both the fruit intensity and the subtle French oak integration.

Serve slightly below room temperature (around 16-18°C) to highlight both the fruit and earthy complexity. The medium body and silky tannins make it versatile with food - try it with duck, lamb, or mushroom-based dishes that complement the forest floor characteristics. The graphite minerality also pairs beautifully with grilled salmon or other meaty fish preparations.

This style indicates the wine emphasises mouthfeel complexity and earthy, non-fruit flavours alongside the cherry and plum notes. The texture comes from careful extraction and oak handling, creating layers that unfold across your palate rather than hitting you with immediate fruit sweetness. Savoury elements like graphite and forest floor add sophistication and food-friendliness, making each sip reveal new nuances as the wine opens up.
