Famous for silky, slick expressions of pinot noir, NZ's Maritnborough region might be small, but its wines punch well above their weight. This is a perfect example of what the region has to offer - concentrated, spicy and pristinely fruited. New Zealand pinot, with an eye on elegance.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Juicy, lively, absolutely moreish. Bright acidity carries waves of fresh berries and stewed rhubarb, while a kiss of toasty French oak adds just enough sophistication without overwhelming the wine's natural elegance. Fine tannins and a peppery backbone give this relatively light-bodied pinot surprising power and structure. Plump strawberries and tart raspberries working with earthy undergrowth and warm spice. There's a savoury complexity here that hints at of forest floor and wild herbs - this isn't your typical fruit-forward crowd-pleaser. This is pinot with personality.

Frequently Asked Questions

Martinborough's unique terroir combines free-draining gravelly soils with a dry microclimate that's ideal for Pinot Noir. The region's diurnal temperature variation - warm days and cool nights - helps preserve the bright acidity you'll find in this Palliser Estate wine while allowing complex flavour development. This creates wines with the elegant, structured style that Martinborough has become renowned for, balancing fruit intensity with earthy complexity.

The toasty French oak in this Pinot Noir provides subtle vanilla and spice notes without masking the wine's natural fruit character. French oak is prized for its tight grain and gentle tannin extraction, which complements Pinot Noir's delicate nature better than more aggressive American oak. The 'kiss' of oak mentioned adds sophistication and structure while maintaining the wine's elegant, light-bodied profile that showcases the Martinborough terroir.

This wine's bright acidity and savoury complexity make it perfect for duck breast, salmon, or mushroom-based dishes that echo its earthy undergrowth notes. The peppery backbone and fine tannins can handle slightly richer preparations, while the fresh berry flavours complement herb-crusted lamb or roasted chicken. The wine's forest floor characteristics also pair beautifully with game birds or dishes featuring thyme and rosemary.

The savoury complexity comes from Martinborough's unique combination of climate and winemaking approach. Cool nights preserve natural acidity while allowing the development of secondary flavours like forest floor and wild herbs through extended skin contact and careful fermentation. These earthy, undergrowth notes are hallmarks of well-made cool-climate Pinot Noir, where the grape can express its terroir rather than just primary fruit flavours.

A 90-point score from Wine Orbit indicates this is an outstanding wine that significantly exceeds expectations for its category. This rating suggests exceptional balance, complexity, and typicity - the wine successfully expresses both its varietal character and regional identity. For a 2022 vintage, this score indicates the wine is drinking beautifully now while having the structure to develop further complexity over the next few years.
