From 75+ year old vines, this wine is incredible. Powerful, full-bodied, complex - loads of red fruit, ripe and spicy, with a good dash of spice and dark chocolate for savoury complexity.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Monsieur Lesec is a jovial chap, slightly portly and upbeat. He’s about the living embodiment of joie de vivre, and has somehow imbued that spirit into his plump, satisfying Châteauneuf. Sensationally concentrated and rich, the amount of flavour he’s packed into one delicious bottle is stunning. Ripe cherries and berries, tangy licorice, tobacco and spice – it’s all there. The cellar potential is ludicrous, but they’re drinking beautifully already so don't hesitate to get stuck in.

I always love this cuvée from Lesec, and the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Galets Blonds looks to be another fine effort. Pretty red currants, blackberries, bouquet garni, and candied violet notes give way to a medium to full-bodied, elegant Châteauneuf du Pape that has a terrific sense of freshness, ripe yet present tannins, and a great finish. It’s well worth seeking out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Patrick Lesec's approach creates an exceptionally concentrated wine that balances immediate drinking pleasure with serious ageing potential. The 'Galets Blonds' refers to the famous blonde stones that cover Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards, which absorb heat during the day and radiate it back to the vines at night, contributing to the wine's remarkable intensity. Lesec's winemaking captures this terroir beautifully, producing a wine that's both approachable now and built for decades of cellaring.

GSM stands for Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre - the classic Rhône Valley blend that forms the backbone of great Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache provides the ripe cherry and berry fruits you'll taste, while Syrah contributes the spice and structure, and Mourvèdre adds the tobacco notes and tannic backbone for ageing. This traditional blend creates the complex interplay of flavours that makes Southern Rhône wines so distinctive and food-friendly.

With its exceptional concentration and traditional GSM structure, this wine has what the description calls 'ludicrous' cellar potential - easily 15-20 years or more. Châteauneuf-du-Pape from quality producers like Lesec typically hits its stride around 8-10 years and can continue evolving for decades. The 2019 vintage was excellent in the Southern Rhône, providing the perfect balance of ripeness and acidity needed for long-term ageing.

The rich, spicy character and full body make this perfect for hearty dishes like braised lamb, beef bourguignon, or game meats. The wine's tobacco and liquorice notes complement aged cheeses beautifully, while the cherry and berry fruits pair wonderfully with duck or venison. Traditional Provençal dishes with herbs de Provence create magical combinations, as the wine's Southern French origins naturally harmonise with the regional cuisine.

This is the beauty of quality Châteauneuf-du-Pape - it's drinking beautifully right now while still having enormous potential for improvement. The 2019 is showing its fruit and spice characteristics perfectly at five years old, making it ideal for immediate enjoyment. However, if you can resist, cellaring will reward you with increased complexity, integrated tannins, and the development of those classic aged Châteauneuf characteristics like leather, earth, and dried herbs.
