Once upon a time… this vineyard was the fairway golf course (thus the name). These days, the only thing being driven is excellence - straight down the middle of McLaren Vale’s famed 19th Vineyard. With sweeping views across St Vincent’s Gulf and deep sandy soils that gift a more floral, aromatic expression of shiraz, this truly has become one of Paxton’s crown jewels.

Why do we love this wine?

Here's what's going on once you pop the top off this beauty... The nose is pure temptation - ripe blackberries, crushed raspberries, vanilla cream, and a satisfying hint of chai spice. It’s inviting in that “come sit by the window and take it all in” kind of way. On the palate, it’s smooth but full-bodied, with mulberries leading the charge. The texture is all silk and easy grace. Time in French oak barriques has lengthened and polished the finish, bringing everything into calm, cohesive balance. It’s the kind of shiraz that lingers in your memory - and on your palate - long after that last gorgeous sip.

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for rich, full-bodied Shiraz like this 2023 vintage. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent help retain the blackberry and mulberry fruit characters while developing the spice complexity that defines great McLaren Vale Shiraz. The area's ancient geological formations contribute to the wine's distinctive mineral backbone and ability to showcase French oak integration beautifully.

French oak barriques add subtle vanilla cream notes and chai spice complexity while providing a silky texture that enhances the wine's natural fruit characters. Unlike American oak which can be more pronounced, French oak allows the blackberry and mulberry flavours to remain the stars while contributing elegant tannin structure. The oak integration creates that lingering, polished finish that makes this Shiraz so memorable and food-friendly.

Estate grown means Paxton controls every aspect from vine to bottle, ensuring consistent quality and authentic expression of their McLaren Vale terroir. This hands-on approach allows them to harvest at optimal ripeness for those ripe blackberry and raspberry characters, and manage vineyard practices that enhance the spice complexity. Estate control is particularly important for Shiraz, as timing the harvest correctly determines whether you get jammy fruit or the balanced, elegant style seen in this wine.

The 2023 vintage showcases excellent fruit concentration with balanced acidity, evident in this wine's smooth yet full-bodied character. Recent vintages in McLaren Vale have benefited from consistent growing conditions that allow Shiraz to develop complex spice notes while maintaining fresh berry fruit. The vintage timing also means this wine is drinking beautifully now while having the structure to develop further complexity over the next 5-8 years.

The blackberry and mulberry fruit with chai spice complexity makes this Shiraz excellent with grilled lamb, beef brisket, or rich game dishes where the wine's full body won't be overwhelmed. The vanilla cream notes from French oak also pair beautifully with aged cheeses or mushroom-based dishes. For something different, try it with dark chocolate desserts or spiced Middle Eastern cuisine where the wine's spice box characters can really shine alongside complementary flavours.
