Why do we love this wine?

From the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna this is white wine humming with energy and personality. Grown in the mineral-rich soils of Castiglione di Sicilia, these vines soak up the sun by day and cool mountain air by night - perfect conditions for crafting something vibrant, tense and utterly delicious. This is Etna Rosso at its best - pure Sicilian soul with a modern polish. Perfect with grilled lamb, rich pasta or just a quiet night when you want something that feels alive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Etna wines are shaped by Mount Etna's unique volcanic terroir, where ancient lava flows have created mineral-rich black soils that impart distinctive smoky, earthy characteristics. The high altitude vineyards experience dramatic temperature swings between scorching days and cool nights, creating wines with remarkable tension and complexity. This volcanic influence gives Etna reds their signature minerality and elegant structure, setting them apart from Sicily's warmer coastal regions.

The 2017 vintage is hitting its stride beautifully, having developed secondary flavours while retaining its youthful energy. Etna reds from this excellent vintage are known for their balance of power and elegance, and after six years, the wine's tannins have softened while the volcanic minerality has become more integrated. This is an ideal drinking window where the wine shows both primary fruit character and emerging tertiary complexity.

The wine's mineral backbone and peppery notes make it exceptional with grilled meats, particularly lamb or beef with herbs. Its savoury character and moderate tannins complement rich pasta dishes with mushrooms or tomato-based sauces beautifully. The volcanic minerality also pairs wonderfully with aged cheeses and charcuterie, while the wine's natural acidity cuts through rich, earthy dishes like osso buco or braised short ribs.

Etna Rosso DOC wines are primarily based on Nerello Mascalese, Sicily's noble red grape that thrives in volcanic soils and produces elegant, Burgundian-style wines. These are often blended with smaller amounts of Nerello Cappuccio for added colour and structure, and sometimes other indigenous varieties. The volcanic terroir brings out the best in these native grapes, creating wines with distinctive mineral character and remarkable finesse that reflect their unique mountain environment.

Serve this Etna Rosso slightly below room temperature at 16-18°C to highlight its elegant structure and mineral complexity. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help open up the wine's savoury characteristics and integrate its components. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place - while drinking beautifully now, quality Etna reds like this can continue developing for several more years, gaining additional complexity and tertiary flavours.
