Why do we love this wine?

The Pertaringa name is no stranger to the Aussie household. The iconic Hardy family are to wine what vegemite is to toast: a perfect match. Take a great vintage, a world-famous blend, and classic McLaren Vale calibre and you have a wine that is almost impossible to get sick of. 'Jubey' was a word thrown around a lot on the tasting bench, so you know it must be true. Luscious, smooth, and fruit driven: this is a wine you can really sink your teeth into.

Frequently Asked Questions

GSM stands for Grenache, Syrah (Shiraz), and Mourvèdre - a classic Rhône Valley blend that's become synonymous with Australian winemaking excellence. This combination creates a perfect harmony where Grenache provides juicy fruit and elegance, Shiraz adds structure and spice, while Mourvèdre contributes earthy complexity and tannins. McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate is ideal for ripening these varieties, producing wines with both power and finesse that age beautifully.

McLaren Vale's unique terroir combines ancient geological soils with a Mediterranean climate moderated by cooling sea breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent. This creates perfect conditions for slow, even ripening of red varieties, allowing grapes to develop intense flavors while retaining natural acidity. The region's diverse soil types - from red clay over limestone to sandy loams - add complexity to wines, making McLaren Vale one of Australia's most prestigious red wine regions alongside Barossa Valley.

The wine's blueberry and violet notes with spicy undertones make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisines. Try it with herb-crusted lamb, grilled eggplant with harissa, or aged hard cheeses like Manchego. The medium body and balanced tannins also complement barbecued meats, ratatouille, or even duck confit, while the spice elements enhance dishes with rosemary, thyme, or black pepper.

Serve this GSM at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to showcase its fruit complexity and spice nuances - slightly cooler than room temperature but warmer than typical refrigeration. While delicious now, the 2024 vintage will develop additional complexity over the next 5-8 years if stored properly in a cool, dark place. Decanting for 30 minutes before serving will help open up the aromatics and soften any youthful tannins.

Pertaringa represents the Hardy family's multi-generational commitment to Australian winemaking excellence, with roots tracing back to the 1850s. Their approach combines traditional winemaking techniques with modern innovation, focusing on expressing the unique character of McLaren Vale terroir. The 'Belonging to the Hills' name reflects their deep connection to the land, and their consistent quality has earned recognition from critics and wine lovers alike, making them a benchmark producer in the region.
