An instant staple of the cellar. This one is completely irresistible. A normal afternoon tasting at the Mofo tasting bench was quickly interrupted when this wine was poured. Suddenly, all attention was caught, and the moment savoured. Bec Hardy, you've done it again.

Why do we love this wine?

The Pertaringa name is no stranger to the Aussie household. The iconic Hardy family are to wine what vegemite is to toast: a perfect match. So, to land this beauty from the hands of Bec Hardy is monumental for us, and we couldn't be more pleased. This is McLaren Shiraz through and through, with densely packed dark chocolate and fresh roasted coffee exploding on the nose. The palate follows through just as true, layered with preserved plums, dark forest berries and a lick of vanillin softness. There's one word for this wine, and it's awesome.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Pertaringa Shiraz showcases the distinctive terroir of McLaren Vale through its intense concentration of dark chocolate and coffee aromatics, which are hallmarks of the region's warm Mediterranean climate and ancient soils. The wine's full-bodied structure and preserved plum character reflect the area's ability to produce deeply flavoured Shiraz with excellent fruit retention. McLaren Vale's proximity to the ocean also contributes to the wine's balanced acidity, preventing the rich flavours from becoming overly heavy.

Bec Hardy represents the fifth generation of the legendary Hardy wine family, one of Australia's most influential winemaking dynasties dating back to 1853. Her involvement with Pertaringa continues the family's tradition of innovation while maintaining their reputation for quality Australian wines. The Hardy name carries enormous weight in the industry, comparable to household brands like Vegemite, making any wine bearing their craftsmanship highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

The wine's rich dark chocolate and coffee notes make it an excellent match for grilled red meats, particularly lamb with rosemary or beef with pepper crusts. The preserved plum and dark berry flavours complement game meats like venison or duck, while the vanillin softness pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom-based dishes or dark chocolate desserts that echo the wine's natural cocoa characteristics.

The 2023 vintage represents a recent harvest that captures the fresh, vibrant expression of McLaren Vale Shiraz while maintaining the concentrated flavours this region is famous for. Being a young vintage, the wine displays bright fruit characteristics alongside its rich, full-bodied structure, with the dark forest berries and preserved plums showing excellent integration. This vintage timing suggests the wine has years of development ahead, where the chocolate and coffee notes will likely become even more complex with proper cellaring.

A 4.3 Vivino rating across all vintages indicates consistently exceptional quality and widespread consumer approval, as this score represents feedback from thousands of wine drinkers globally. This high rating suggests the wine delivers on its promise of rich, complex flavours while remaining approachable to a broad range of palates. The combination of professional recognition as an 'Iconic Producer' wine and strong consumer ratings demonstrates that this Shiraz successfully balances traditional winemaking excellence with modern appeal.
