Why do we love this wine?

Burgundian pinot is a beast unto itself. A cool, mysterious, curious, shape-shifting beast that dually surprises and delights. This is classically burg in its complexity and intrigue, and also in the way it delivers fresh, bright red fruit on the back of fine boned, grainy tannin and piercing, lifted acidity.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Pierre Naigeon showcases the classic Burgundian approach to Pinot Noir with its cool climate elegance and terroir-driven complexity. Unlike the riper, fruit-forward style often found in warmer regions, this wine emphasises mineral precision, fine-grained tannins, and that distinctive 'shape-shifting' character that Burgundy is famous for. The lifted acidity and grainy texture reflect the limestone-rich soils of Burgundy, creating a wine that's more about finesse than power.

Serve this wine slightly below room temperature at around 14-16°C to highlight its fresh red fruit character and elegant structure. The medium body and textured, savoury profile make it incredibly food-friendly - it pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, duck breast, or mushroom-based dishes that complement Burgundy's earthy complexity. Decanting for 30 minutes will help open up the wine's intricate aromatics.

This 2018 is drinking beautifully now, showing the bright red fruit and piercing acidity that makes young Burgundy so appealing. However, quality Bourgogne Rouge like this can develop additional complexity over 5-8 years, with the tannins softening and secondary earthy, forest floor notes emerging. The wine's fine bone structure suggests it has the backbone for medium-term cellaring if you prefer more developed flavours.

The combination of black cherry with pepper indicates this Burgundy strikes a perfect balance between fruit purity and savoury complexity. The cherry notes reflect the cool climate ripening that preserves fresh fruit character, while the pepper suggests spice from whole bunch fermentation or stem inclusion - a traditional Burgundian technique. This flavour profile, combined with blueberry undertones, creates the textured, savoury style that makes this wine so food-compatible and age-worthy.

Pierre Naigeon represents the artisanal spirit of Burgundy, crafting wines that express the true character of their terroir rather than following commercial trends. Les Combes is a vineyard site that produces Bourgogne Rouge with remarkable complexity for its appellation level, demonstrating how skilled winemaking can elevate regional fruit to near-village quality. The 4.1 Vivino rating across all vintages reflects the consistent quality this producer achieves from this particular site.
