This is an amazing opportunity to try some of the country's most recognisable premium Pinot at a fraction of the price. Incredibly exciting, this producer is one of the oldest in the region, and their estate pinot noir is one of the best value drops around.

Why do we love this wine?

We can't believe we've managed to get our hands on this one! From two of the most premium blocks in this producer's extensive holdings, this delicious drops is loaded with ripe dark fruits and red berries. Nine months on lees in premium French oak has imparted incredible drive and structure, but the wine remains elegant and silky on the palate, perfectly supported by ripe tannins. W-O-W

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from two of the producer's most premium vineyard blocks, which typically command much higher prices. The 'Black Market Deal' designation suggests we've secured this exceptional Yarra Valley Pinot at a fraction of its usual retail price, making premium fruit quality accessible to savvy wine lovers. It's the kind of deal that happens when producers need to move stock quickly or when long-standing relationships allow for special pricing.

Lees contact is a traditional technique where the wine rests on dead yeast cells after fermentation, creating a more complex texture and enhanced mouthfeel. In this Pinot Noir, the extended lees aging has built incredible drive and structure while maintaining the grape's natural elegance. This process adds subtle creaminess and depth without overwhelming the delicate cherry and strawberry fruit characters that make Pinot Noir so appealing.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and varied topography create perfect conditions for Pinot Noir's finicky nature. The region's temperature variations between day and night help preserve the grape's natural acidity while allowing flavours to develop slowly and completely. This terroir influence is evident in the wine's elegant profile and the way it balances ripe dark fruits with the characteristic white pepper spice that defines quality Australian Pinot Noir.

While this 2024 Pinot Noir is beautifully approachable now with its silky texture and ripe tannins, its structure from French oak aging suggests excellent cellaring potential. Light-bodied Pinots from premium Yarra Valley sites often develop gorgeous secondary characters over 5-8 years, evolving from primary fruit flavours into more complex earthy and savoury notes. The choice depends on whether you prefer youthful vibrancy or aged complexity.

The wine's elegant, light-bodied profile with cherry and strawberry notes makes it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that won't overpower its delicate character. Think roasted duck, salmon, mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses where the wine's silky texture and balanced tannins can complement rather than compete. The white pepper notes also make it excellent with herb-crusted lamb or charcuterie boards featuring mild salami and soft cheeses.
