Why do we love this wine?

This is a Halliday Dark Horse of the Year shortlisted producer - one of the most exciting under-the-radar names in the Yarra Valley right now - and this single vineyard pinot from a Steels Creek site planted in 1992 show us exactly why the wine world is starting to pay very close attention. Light, bright and wildly fragrant from the first sniff. Red cherry, pomegranate, incense and delicate florals on the nose, with an energetic, beautifully balanced palate that's all finesse and precision. Quietly powerful in the best possible way - the kind of pinot that reveals more and more the longer you sit with it... Go on, have a seat!

Frequently Asked Questions

This winery was shortlisted for Halliday's Dark Horse of the Year award, recognising emerging producers who are creating exceptional wines while flying under the mainstream radar. The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soil types provide ideal conditions for Pinot Noir, and this particular producer has mastered the art of expressing their Steels Creek vineyard's unique terroir. Their approach focuses on finesse over power, creating wines that showcase the elegance and complexity that make Yarra Valley one of Australia's premier Pinot Noir regions.

Vines planted in 1992 are now over 30 years old, reaching that sweet spot of maturity where they produce fruit with exceptional concentration and complexity. Older vines develop deeper root systems that access different soil layers and water sources, creating more nuanced flavour profiles. In the Steels Creek subregion of the Yarra Valley, these mature vines benefit from the area's elevated sites and cool climate, producing grapes with the perfect balance of ripeness and natural acidity that defines great Pinot Noir.

Serve this wine slightly chilled at 14-16°C to highlight its delicate aromatics and bright acidity. The light body and elegant structure make it incredibly food-friendly - try it with duck breast, mushroom risotto, or salmon teriyaki. The wine's cranberry and raspberry notes also complement charcuterie boards and soft cheeses beautifully. Given its 'quietly powerful' nature, this Pinot rewards slow sipping and will continue to evolve in the glass over 30-45 minutes.

The 95-point rating from Halliday Wine Companion places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, representing fewer than 5% of wines reviewed. The additional Special Value Award indicates exceptional quality relative to price point, making this a rare find in today's market. James Halliday's scoring system is particularly respected for Australian wines, and these dual accolades suggest this producer is delivering premium Yarra Valley Pinot Noir at an accessible price - exactly the kind of discovery that wine enthusiasts treasure.

While this wine is absolutely delicious now with its bright fruit and floral aromatics, quality Yarra Valley Pinot Noir from mature vines typically develops beautifully over 5-8 years. The wine's natural acidity and underlying structure will allow it to evolve, with the primary fruit flavours gradually giving way to more complex earthy and savoury notes. Store it in a cool, dark place and consider opening bottles periodically to track its development - though with its current balance and drinkability, you might find it hard to resist enjoying it sooner rather than later.
