The return of one of our most-requested wines of all time. The Blend - from Australian winemaking savant Dave Powell - is a remarkable wine. Breadth, weight, rusticity, opulence - there's not a box it doesn't tick. It is a wine approaching perfection. Don't let the name fool you, this is 100% Barossa shiraz.

Why do we love this wine?

We thought this wine was gone forever, we grieved, we healed, we moved on... and then we got a call... and not a second too late. Just when we thought Powell & Son couldn’t impress us more, they raised the bar higher than it’s ever been before. This seems too good to be true, right? We’re pinching ourselves too: it’s not every day that you get the best sub-regions of the Barossa (Marananga playing a big part of that), with the fruit of each vineyard separately nurtured and carefully blended after 18 months ageing in French oak. The name says it all, but this isn’t just any blend: it’s the king of blends. All shiraz. All star fruit. All the best oak. All in one neat little parcel. If this doesn’t tickle your fancy, truly nothing will.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the exceptional terroir of Barossa's sub-regions, particularly Marananga, which is renowned for producing some of Australia's most concentrated and age-worthy Shiraz. Each vineyard parcel was vinified separately before blending, allowing the winemaker to craft a wine that captures the unique characteristics of different sites. The 18-month French oak maturation adds complexity and structure, creating a harmonious marriage between fruit intensity and elegant oak integration that exemplifies premium Barossa winemaking.

The 2023 vintage in Barossa was marked by excellent growing conditions that produced fruit with exceptional concentration and balance. This relatively recent vintage means you're experiencing the wine in its youthful, vibrant phase, where the primary fruit flavours of blackberry and plum are at their peak intensity. While delicious now, this full-bodied style will continue to develop complexity over the next 8-12 years, with the earthy undertones becoming more pronounced as the wine matures.

The wine's rich, full-bodied profile and earthy complexity make it an ideal companion for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks, grilled ribeye steak, or game meats like venison, where the wine's tannin structure will complement the protein's richness. The blackberry and plum notes also pair beautifully with dishes featuring dark fruit reductions or Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and thyme.

French oak imparts more subtle, refined tannins compared to American oak, allowing the intense fruit character of Barossa Shiraz to remain the star while adding layers of complexity. The 18-month maturation period allows for gentle extraction of oak compounds that contribute spice, vanilla, and structural elements without overwhelming the wine's natural fruit expression. This approach is particularly valued in premium Australian winemaking as it creates wines with both power and elegance, suitable for extended cellaring.

This blend represents the modern Barossa approach of combining traditional winemaking with precision viticulture, focusing on site-specific fruit selection rather than simply pursuing maximum extraction. The separate vineyard treatment and careful blending creates more complexity than single-vineyard expressions, while the French oak regime positions it in the elegant, age-worthy category rather than the immediately approachable, American oak-influenced style. It's a wine that bridges the gap between Barossa's powerful reputation and contemporary finesse-driven winemaking.
