Rich and silky whilst juicy and fragrant. This one shows us why people make blends, grenache, mataro and shiraz really are three peas in a pod and, rather than fight each other, work in harmony to create a wine that's bigger than the sum of its parts.

Why do we love this wine?

Rosenvale are one of our favourites from the Barossa, crafters of this rich, powerful GSM. The raspberry characteristic, derived from the grenache component, is the dominant fruit, with support from plum and blackberry hints carried by the shiraz. To round it all out, there’s a bit of allspice and earthiness thanks to the mataro. It’s bold, deep in flavour and ready to go now, or any time in the next few years.

Wine Orbit

Wine Orbit

It's sweetly fruited and delightfully fragrant on the nose with dark plum, spiced cherry, clove and hazelnut aromas. The palate is equally satisfying, delivering succulent fruit richness with silky texture and polished tannins. Gorgeously rounded and smooth with layers of delectable flavours. At its best: now to 2034

Frequently Asked Questions

GSM stands for Grenache, Shiraz, and Mataro (also known as Mourvèdre), a classic Rhône-style blend that's become synonymous with Australian winemaking excellence. This combination works brilliantly because each variety contributes distinct characteristics - grenache provides bright raspberry fruit and elegance, shiraz adds structure and dark berry flavours, while mataro brings earthiness and spice complexity. The Barossa Valley's warm climate is particularly suited to this blend, allowing each variety to ripen fully while maintaining balance.

Being a full-bodied red with 95 points from Wine Orbit, this GSM deserves proper treatment to showcase its complexity. Serve it at cellar temperature (16-18°C) and consider decanting for 30-60 minutes to allow the bold flavours and earthy notes to open up fully. The wine's rich, powerful profile makes it perfect for hearty dishes like grilled lamb, barbecued meats, or aged cheeses that can match its intensity.

The wine's dominant raspberry character from grenache, combined with plum and blackberry notes from shiraz, plus the allspice and earthiness from mataro, creates incredible versatility with food. It's exceptional with Mediterranean cuisine, particularly herb-crusted lamb or beef, where the wine's spice elements complement rosemary and thyme. The earthy mataro component also makes it brilliant with mushroom-based dishes or charcuterie boards featuring cured meats and aged cheeses.

This 2022 vintage is described as 'ready to go now, or any time in the next few years', making it beautifully approachable for immediate enjoyment. The wine's full-bodied structure and complexity suggest it will continue to develop gracefully over the next 3-5 years, with the fruit flavours integrating further with the spice and earthy elements. If you enjoy more primary fruit expression, drink it now; if you prefer more developed, integrated flavours, cellar it for 2-3 years.

Rosenvale Vineyards has earned recognition as one of the standout producers in the Barossa Valley, particularly for their estate-grown fruit which ensures complete control over quality from vine to bottle. Their GSM achieving 95 points and Five Stars from Wine Orbit demonstrates their mastery of this classic blend style. The 'Estate Grown' designation means they're not just winemakers but viticulturists, allowing them to craft wines that truly express the unique terroir of their Barossa vineyard sites.
