No winery has more right to call itself a Barossa institution than Saltram. Over 160 years of winemaking in one of the world's great wine regions - a history so intertwined with the Barossa story that the two are essentially inseparable. And the 2022 vintage gave them something extraordinary to work with. This is about as good as the Barossa gets.

Why do we love this wine?

2022 gave us the kind of season that produces fruit of exceptional concentration, natural balance and a depth of flavour that winemakers spend entire careers chasing. From a single vineyard on Boundary Road in the Northwestern Fringe, Saltram have captured every bit of it. Aromatic and lifted on the nose - blood plum, dried fruit and a whisper of black olive that gives it a savoury, characterful edge. The palate is full-bodied and velvety, with dense dark fruit, chalky tannins and a complex array of spice running through a seamless, persistent finish that just keeps going. Rich. Deep. Unmistakably Barossa. From a vintage that may never be bettered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Barossa Valley's warm continental climate and ancient soils create ideal conditions for producing rich, concentrated Shiraz with exceptional depth. The region's old vine heritage, some dating back over 150 years, contributes to the complexity and intensity that Barossa Shiraz is renowned for worldwide. This Saltram expression showcases these classic regional characteristics through its full-bodied profile and spice-driven flavour complexity.

The 2022 vintage in Barossa was marked by excellent growing conditions that produced wines with vibrant fruit expression and balanced acidity. This relatively recent vintage means the wine is drinking beautifully now while retaining excellent cellaring potential for 8-12 years. The cherry and raspberry notes are particularly pronounced in this vintage, making it an ideal representation of modern Australian Shiraz winemaking.

Single vineyard wines represent the purest expression of a specific site's terroir, showcasing unique soil, climate and topographical influences. The Boundary Road vineyard allows Saltram to capture distinct characteristics that would be diluted in a multi-vineyard blend. This focused approach typically results in more complex, site-specific flavours and greater aging potential compared to regional blends.

Saltram's 5 Red Star Halliday rating places them among Australia's elite wineries, recognising consistent excellence across their portfolio. As an 'Iconic Winery', they've demonstrated decades of quality winemaking and innovation in the Barossa region. This recognition reflects their ability to balance traditional techniques with modern technology, producing wines that consistently score well with critics and consumers alike.

The wine's rich, spice-driven profile makes it perfect for robust dishes like grilled lamb, beef steaks, or slow-cooked game meats. The cherry and raspberry fruit flavours also complement dishes with berry-based sauces or Mediterranean herbs like rosemary and thyme. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese, which will enhance the wine's spicy complexity while balancing its full-bodied structure.
