Why do we love this wine?

60% shiraz, 30% grenache, 10% mourvedre - a traditional French blend but one that will be very familiar to most Australian wine drinkers. Dark fruited, with the dominant fruit being blackberry, dark cherry and blueberry, the silky smooth mouthfeel and lush richness build a surprisingly weighty palate and lengthy finish. The secret to this wine, as with may other French imports, is the structure. Velvety tannins, well-integrated oak and gorgeous natural acid push and pull the palate in unison and create a complexity that amplifies the pristine fruit. Well made wine, drinking beautifully.

Frequently Asked Questions

The SGM blend (Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre) represents a fascinating convergence of French tradition and Australian familiarity. While this combination originated in France's Languedoc region, it became the backbone of Australia's most celebrated wines, particularly in regions like Barossa Valley. This wine showcases how the same varietals express differently in French terroir, offering Australian palates a chance to explore their favourite blend through a European lens with more structured tannins and integrated acidity.

The triple 95-point scores from International Wine Challenge, Decanter World Wine Awards, and Sam Kim reflect exceptional winemaking consistency and quality. These prestigious competitions judge wines blind, focusing on technical excellence, balance, and expression of place. The unanimous high scoring suggests this wine successfully marries the power of its full-bodied style with remarkable finesse, demonstrating that Languedoc producers are crafting wines that rival the world's best.

The Shiraz-dominant blend creates a structured hierarchy where each varietal plays a specific role. Shiraz at 60% provides the backbone of dark fruit intensity and spice, while Grenache at 30% contributes silky texture and red berry complexity. The 10% Mourvedre acts as the wine's architectural element, adding earthy tannins and savoury depth that extends the finish. This precise ratio ensures power without overwhelming richness, creating the 'surprisingly weighty palate' noted in tastings.

Well-integrated oak means the wood influence enhances rather than dominates the wine's natural fruit character. Instead of obvious vanilla or toast flavours, the oak provides subtle structural support, contributing to the wine's velvety tannins and complexity without masking the pristine blackberry and dark cherry fruit. This integration suggests careful barrel selection and timing, allowing the oak to marry seamlessly with the wine's natural acidity and create that noted 'push and pull' sensation on the palate.

The description notes it's 'drinking beautifully' now, indicating immediate accessibility despite its full-bodied structure. The 2022 vintage shows excellent balance between fruit freshness and developed complexity, with velvety tannins that won't require extended cellaring to soften. However, given the wine's structural integrity and the quality suggested by its ratings, it should continue developing gracefully for 5-8 years, allowing the Mourvedre component to add further savoury complexity while maintaining its lush fruit character.
