Some wines are made to impress. This one was made to be perfect. The producer subjects this booming shiraz to an almost unreasonable level of scrutiny before a single bottle leaves the winery. That's what makes it the flagship, pièce de résistance - and honestly, one of the most complete Barossa wines we've seen in years.

Why do we love this wine?

A blend of Greenock Barossa fruit and high-altitude Eden shiraz from the cooler 2017 vintage - and that cool season is everything here. Nearly a decade into its journey and this wine is looking better and better every single day, with blackberry, raspberry, dried fruits, leather, nutmeg and a mushroom-driven complexity that keeps building in the glass. The tannins are fine and completely seamless, the balance is immaculate, and the finish has a depth and authority that very few Australian shiraz at any price can match. This is not simply a great Barossa shiraz. This is what Barossa shiraz aspires to be.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2017 vintage was notably cooler than typical Barossa conditions, which allowed the grapes to ripen more slowly and develop greater complexity. This extended ripening period has resulted in a wine with exceptional balance and finesse, showcasing how climate variations can elevate Australian shiraz beyond the typical bold, warm-climate style. The cooler conditions have contributed to the wine's seamless tannin integration and remarkable ageing potential.

This wine combines the rich, powerful fruit character of Greenock (lower Barossa Valley) with the elegant, structured shiraz from the high-altitude Eden Valley sub-region. The Eden Valley component adds freshness and mineral complexity due to its cooler climate and higher elevation, while the Greenock fruit provides depth and concentration. This regional blending technique is a hallmark of premium Barossa winemaking, creating wines with both power and elegance.

At nearly a decade old, this shiraz is entering its prime drinking window but has excellent potential for further development. The seamless tannins and building complexity suggest it will continue to evolve gracefully for another 5-10 years. As it ages, expect the primary fruit flavours to integrate further with the earthy, leather and spice notes, while the mushroom-driven complexity will become more pronounced, adding layers of savoury depth.

This wine's rich blackberry and raspberry fruit, combined with its earthy leather and nutmeg complexity, makes it ideal for robust dishes like slow-cooked lamb, aged beef steaks, or game meats. The wine's fine tannin structure and savoury elements also pair beautifully with mushroom-based dishes, mature cheeses, or even dark chocolate desserts. Its full-bodied nature can stand up to bold flavours and rich sauces.

A 95-point rating from Wine Pilot places this shiraz in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that represents the pinnacle of Australian winemaking. This score reflects the wine's impeccable balance, complexity, and ageing potential - qualities that distinguish it from typical commercial shiraz. Such high ratings are reserved for wines that demonstrate technical excellence, regional character, and the ability to improve with time, making this bottle a serious collector's item.
