Clare Valley Shiraz doesn't get nearly enough attention. That's about to change. Eight years of bottle age has turned this into a perfect example of what Clare shiraz becomes with time - the tannins have softened and integrated beautifully, and the wine has settled into a richness and complexity that's deeply satisfying.

Why do we love this wine?

This producer has been quietly making some of the most consistently excellent red wine in South Australia since the 1890s - a track record that includes Jimmy Watson trophies, Langton's Classification status, and a reputation built on doing things properly for well over a century. The single vineyard release is where that heritage really shows. Old vines, dry-grown on terra rossa and slate in the Clare's natural rain shadow. The kind of site that produces fruit with an intensity and concentration that irrigated vineyards simply can't replicate. Blackberry, raspberry, mocha and dark chocolate, with a savoury depth and a firm structure that tells you there's plenty more development ahead. French oak maturation has added weight and texture without ever dominating the fruit. Drink it now with something substantial off the grill, or put it down for another five to ten years. Either way, this is Clare Valley Shiraz punching well above its weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine comes from old vines grown in Clare Valley's natural rain shadow on terra rossa and slate soils, which creates exceptional concentration that irrigated vineyards can't match. The dry-grown conditions stress the vines just enough to produce intensely flavoured fruit with remarkable depth. Combined with the producer's 130-year heritage of winemaking excellence, this represents Clare Valley Shiraz at its most authentic and powerful.

With its firm structure and concentrated fruit from old vines, this wine has excellent cellaring potential of 5-10 years from now. The French oak maturation has provided the backbone for extended ageing, while the natural acidity from Clare Valley's cool nights will help preserve freshness. As it develops, expect the current blackberry and raspberry notes to evolve into more complex tertiary flavours while the tannins soften beautifully.

The wine's rich, full-bodied character and savoury depth make it perfect for substantial grilled meats like ribeye steak, lamb chops, or barbecued beef ribs. The mocha and dark chocolate notes also complement dishes with earthy flavours such as mushroom risotto or slow-braised beef with root vegetables. The firm tannin structure can handle rich, fatty foods while the fruit intensity won't be overwhelmed by bold flavours.

Museum releases represent wines that have been carefully stored by the producer and released after additional bottle ageing, allowing them to develop complexity beyond their initial release. This 2018 Shiraz has had time to integrate its components - the French oak, tannins, and concentrated fruit have married together beautifully. These releases often showcase how a wine evolves and are prized by collectors for their ready-to-drink maturity and rarity.

Terra rossa is the famous red clay soil over limestone found in premium Australian wine regions, particularly renowned in Clare Valley and Coonawarra. This soil type provides excellent drainage while retaining enough moisture for the vines, and the limestone base contributes to the wine's natural acidity and mineral backbone. The iron-rich red clay gives wines grown on terra rossa their distinctive earthy, savoury complexity and helps create the firm structure that makes this Shiraz so age-worthy.
