Why do we love this wine?

This powerful shiraz has been sourced from the very best west-facing hillside Marananga block, smack-bang in the the middle of Australia's favourite wine region, the Barossa. Aged in a combination of both French and American oak for at least 18 months, this wine is crafted to go the distance and is best enjoyed in life's finer moments. A potential 15 year nap in the cellar is far from off the cards here, a genuine collectors item. This is a very big wine. A dense, sweet-fruited core, firm-but-friendly tannins and glorious natural acid run the show whilst the American and French oak hum along in the background bringing added weight. Big time Barossa. Not one to miss.

Frequently Asked Questions

The combination of premium Marananga fruit, dual French and American oak maturation, and the wine's structured tannin profile creates exceptional ageing potential. Barossa Shiraz from hillside vineyards typically develops complex secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earthy notes over time, while the natural acidity preserves freshness. The 18-month oak treatment provides sufficient backbone without overwhelming the fruit, allowing the wine to evolve gracefully in the cellar.

The dual oak approach creates complexity that neither wood type could achieve alone. French oak contributes subtle spice, fine tannins, and elegant structure, while American oak adds vanilla sweetness, coconut notes, and broader texture. This combination is particularly effective with Barossa Shiraz, as it balances the variety's natural power with sophisticated oak integration, creating a wine that's both approachable and cellar-worthy.

The wine's dense fruit core and firm tannins make it perfect for rich, protein-heavy dishes like slow-cooked lamb shanks, barbecued beef ribs, or aged hard cheeses. The chocolate and spice notes complement dishes with similar flavour profiles, such as beef bourguignon or dark chocolate desserts. The wine's structure can handle bold flavours and fatty textures, making it ideal for hearty winter meals or special occasion dining.

West-facing slopes in Marananga receive intense afternoon sun, concentrating flavours and creating the dense, sweet-fruited core characteristic of premium Barossa Shiraz. This exposure, combined with the sub-region's ancient soils and elevation, produces grapes with exceptional colour density and natural acidity. Marananga is renowned for producing some of Barossa's most structured and age-worthy Shiraz, with the hillside location providing crucial drainage and temperature variation.

These exceptional scores from respected Australian wine critics suggest this is a standout example of Barossa Shiraz, likely representing excellent value at the Black Market Deal price point. Ratings in the 96-point range typically indicate wines with outstanding complexity, balance, and ageing potential that rival much more expensive bottlings. The consistency between both critics reinforces the wine's quality, suggesting it successfully combines power with finesse in the classic Barossa style.
