Why do we love this wine?

These guys are one of Heathcote's most respected names, and this might be their very best red wine - organically farmed, single-block fruit from a high-elevation site that coaxes something genuinely special out of the variety. This isn't all about brute force or overly oaked juice. As Jeni Port points out in her 96pt Halliday review - 'this is something altogether more intriguing.' Deep purple in the glass, with violet, black cherry, blueberry and a ferrous, earthy complexity on the nose that immediately signals you're somewhere different. The palate is silky and seamless - juicy and fine-textured, rolling effortlessly from one sip to the next. And then, just when you think you've got it figured out, that unmistakable Heathcote character emerges underneath. A quiet, brooding power that suggests this wine has considerably more to reveal with time (or a good decant).

Frequently Asked Questions

Heathcote's ancient Cambrian soils and elevated sites create a distinctive terroir that produces Shiraz with remarkable complexity and restraint. The region's unique geology imparts that characteristic ferrous, earthy minerality you'll find in this wine, while the cooler elevation preserves natural acidity and allows for slower ripening. This results in wines that balance power with elegance - avoiding the overly extracted, jammy character sometimes found in warmer Australian regions.

Organic viticulture allows the vineyard's natural terroir to express itself more authentically by avoiding synthetic chemicals that can mask subtle soil characteristics. In this single-block Tellurian Shiraz, organic practices have helped preserve the delicate violet and blueberry notes while enhancing the wine's mineral complexity. The result is a more nuanced expression that truly reflects Heathcote's distinctive geological fingerprint rather than winemaking intervention.

While this Shiraz is beautifully balanced and approachable now, decanting for 30-60 minutes will unlock its full potential. The wine's 'quiet, brooding power' suggests layers of complexity that benefit from aeration to fully emerge. Decanting will help integrate the tannins, allowing the silky texture to shine while revealing more of those intriguing earthy undertones that make this wine special.

A 96-point score from James Halliday represents exceptional quality - wines in this range are considered outstanding examples of their variety and region. Halliday's praise for this being 'something altogether more intriguing' indicates the wine transcends typical varietal expectations, showing unique character and complexity. Such high scores are reserved for wines that demonstrate perfect balance, distinctive terroir expression, and significant ageing potential.

Given its structured tannins, natural acidity from organic farming, and the inherent longevity of quality Heathcote Shiraz, this wine should develop beautifully over 8-12 years. The 'brooding power' mentioned in the tasting notes suggests considerable untapped potential that will emerge with proper cellaring. Store it in cool, dark conditions and expect the wine to gain complexity while the silky texture becomes even more refined with age.
