This is Barossa shiraz with brains as well as brawn - nothing overdone, just flavour that feels both powerful and controlled. Smoothness, complexity and depth all wrapped up in a velvety package. There’s opulence, fruit weight, fine tannins and a hell of a long finish on this one. Halliday’s already dropped 95 points on it - we’ll just say it straight: this is utterly delicious.

Why do we love this wine?

Classic single vineyard Barossa shiraz made from old vines on the western ridge of the valley. Plum, mulberry and clove jump out of the glass upon first whiff. The palate expands even further with vanilla, liquorice, dark chocolate and graphite. The mix of seasoned American and French oak in the maturation has given rise to a mix of sweet spices, vanilla bean and roasted coffee notes that accentuate the high-toned fragrance of the already beautiful shiraz fruit from some seriously kick ass growers. Shiraz lovers, eat your heart out.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the distinctive terroir of Barossa's western ridge through old vine fruit from a single vineyard, which concentrates flavours and adds complexity that younger vines simply cannot achieve. The combination of seasoned American and French oak creates a sophisticated balance between sweet vanilla notes and savoury elements, while the high altitude western ridge location provides the perfect conditions for developing the wine's signature graphite minerality and structured tannins.

Serve this medium-bodied Shiraz at 16-18°C to allow its complex aromatics of plum, mulberry and clove to fully express themselves. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help integrate the oak influences and soften the tannins, revealing the wine's layers of dark chocolate, liquorice and roasted coffee notes. The wine's textured, savoury profile makes it perfect for pairing with grilled meats, aged cheeses, or rich stews where its structured palate can complement bold flavours.

The 95-point Halliday Wine Companion rating places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that represents the top tier of Australian wine production. James Suckling's 'Outstanding' rating further confirms this assessment, while the 4.0 Vivino score reflects strong consumer appreciation. These consistently high ratings across different reviewing platforms suggest this is a wine that delivers both critical acclaim and drinking pleasure, representing excellent value for a premium single vineyard Barossa Shiraz.

The wine's savoury profile and medium body make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with rich, umami-driven dishes that complement its graphite minerality and spice notes. Think slow-cooked lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or even hearty mushroom risottos where the wine's vanilla and dark chocolate notes can bridge sweet and savoury elements. The liquorice and clove characteristics also pair beautifully with Middle Eastern spices, making it excellent with dishes featuring cinnamon, cardamom, or star anise.

As a 2023 vintage from old vines with quality oak maturation, this Shiraz has excellent aging potential of 8-12 years, during which the current fruit-forward plum and mulberry notes will evolve into more complex tertiary flavours. The tannin structure and acidity will gradually soften, allowing the wine's savoury elements and mineral graphite character to become more prominent. The integration of American and French oak will continue to develop, with the vanilla and roasted coffee notes becoming more seamlessly woven into the wine's overall profile.
