Why do we love this wine?

Hunter Valley at its absolute best. The vintage conditions were near perfect. Abundant spring rain provided great soil moisture heading into the dry summer months, while the harvest period was stress-free without adverse conditions. And here's the result - an exceptional Hunter Valley vintage that produced well-balanced, complex wines with remarkable fruit purity. Hand harvested on 20 February at the coldest part of the day, fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks before nine months maturation in a single four-year-old French oak cask, then five more months in puncheons. The winemaking respects both the fruit and the vineyard's reputation. Huon Hooke awarded this 95 points, calling it "outstanding wine" with "intensity, concentration and drive, but not at the expense of elegance." Bright red with purple hues, sweet red fruit aromatics highlighted with cranberry, velvety tannins coating the palate with directional dark cherry and a clean, neat finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Stevens Vineyard Shiraz earned dual 95-point ratings from both Halliday and Real Review due to exceptional vintage conditions and meticulous winemaking. The 2023 vintage benefited from abundant spring rain followed by a stress-free harvest, creating ideal conditions for fruit development. The careful maturation process - nine months in a single four-year-old French oak cask followed by five months in puncheons - allowed the wine to develop remarkable complexity while maintaining the elegant fruit purity that Hunter Valley Shiraz is renowned for.

The hand-harvesting at dawn captures the fruit at optimal coolness, preserving delicate aromatics and preventing oxidation. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks maintains fruit purity before the extended 14-month oak maturation program begins. The use of a single four-year-old French oak cask rather than new oak allows the vineyard's terroir to shine through while adding subtle complexity, followed by puncheon aging that softens tannins and integrates flavours beautifully.

This wine's velvety tannins and dark cherry flavours make it perfect for rich, savoury dishes that can match its intensity. Classic pairings include grilled lamb with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or slow-cooked game meats where the wine's concentration won't be overwhelmed. The cranberry notes also complement duck or venison, while the vanilla undertones from oak aging work beautifully with barbecued meats or dishes featuring earthy mushrooms and herbs.

Stevens Vineyard has earned recognition as Halliday's #1 Rated Winery for 2024 and holds 5 Star Red Producer status, reflecting decades of consistent excellence. Hunter Valley's unique terroir - with its ancient volcanic soils and distinctive climate - produces Shiraz with a signature elegance that differs markedly from other Australian regions. This single vineyard bottling showcases the site's ability to produce wines with both power and finesse, demonstrating why Hunter Valley Shiraz commands such respect among wine enthusiasts globally.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its bright fruit and integrated tannins, its 95-point quality suggests excellent aging potential of 10-15 years. The wine's structure and concentration will allow it to develop additional complexity, with the cranberry and cherry notes evolving into more savoury, earthy characteristics over time. The quality French oak maturation has provided a solid foundation for aging, though many will find the current balance of fruit intensity and elegant tannins irresistible for immediate enjoyment.
