This is the newest release of a genuine icon. The Blend - from Australian winemaking savant Dave Powell - is a remarkable wine. Breadth, weight, rusticity, opulence - there's not a note it doesn't strike or a box it doesn't tick. It is a wine approaching perfection.

Why do we love this wine?

Just when we thought Powell & Sons couldn’t impress us more, they raised the bar higher than it’s ever been before. This seems to good to be true, right? We’re pinching ourselves too: it’s not every day that you get the best sub-regions of the Barossa (Marananga playing a big part of that), with the fruit of each vineyard separately nurtured and carefully blended after 18 months ageing in French oak. The name says it all, but this isn’t just any blend: it’s the king of blends. All shiraz. All star fruit. All the best oak. All in one neat little parcel. If this doesn’t tickle your fancy, truly nothing will.

Frequently Asked Questions

This isn't your typical regional blend - Powell & Son sources fruit specifically from Barossa's premium sub-regions, with Marananga playing a starring role. Each vineyard parcel is vinified separately and aged for 18 months in French oak before the final blend is crafted. This meticulous approach allows the winemaker to highlight the unique terroir characteristics of each site while creating a harmonious whole that represents the very best of what Barossa Shiraz can offer.

The 2021 vintage in Barossa was exceptional, earning recognition as a 'Killer Vintage' for good reason. This year delivered ideal growing conditions with balanced rainfall and warm, dry ripening periods that concentrated flavours without compromising freshness. The result is a wine that showcases intense blood plum and allspice characteristics while maintaining the structural integrity that allows for both immediate enjoyment and cellar-worthy ageing potential.

The rich, full-bodied nature and French oak influence make this wine perfect for hearty dishes that can match its intensity. Think slow-cooked lamb shanks with rosemary, aged beef steaks, or rich game meats like venison. The allspice notes also complement Middle Eastern spiced dishes beautifully, while the blood plum characteristics pair wonderfully with duck or pork belly glazed with dark fruits.

Powell & Son has earned its reputation through consistent excellence and innovation in Barossa winemaking, achieving Five Star Halliday Winery status. Their approach combines traditional Barossa techniques with modern precision, sourcing from premium vineyard sites and employing extended oak ageing programs. This dedication to quality has made them a 'Mofo Fav Producer', indicating they consistently deliver wines that exceed expectations at their price point.

With its full-bodied structure, French oak backbone, and premium Barossa fruit, this wine has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years from vintage. The 18-month oak ageing has already integrated beautifully, making it approachable now for those who enjoy bold, structured wines. However, patience will be rewarded - the wine will develop greater complexity and softer tannins over the next 5-7 years, with the blood plum and allspice notes evolving into more nuanced secondary characteristics.
