Why do we love this wine?

Known for producing some of the country's finest Shiraz (read: Hill of Grace), the Eden Valley area of Barossa is an incredible source of premium shiraz. The vineyards there seem to bear fruit worthy of royal status, it almost feels too good to drink. This premo shiraz shows immense complexity, with a nose of pomegranate and cherry molasses, black pepper and rip plums. The palate is silky smooth, rich and balanced with classic Eden acidity that keeps it all fresh and delightfully playful. This is a lot of shiraz, and a steal at the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eden Valley sits at higher altitude within the broader Barossa region, creating cooler conditions that produce more elegant, structured Shiraz compared to the warmer valley floor. This elevation preserves natural acidity and allows for slower ripening, resulting in wines with greater complexity and finesse. The Parish Hall St Hugh's exemplifies this style with its silky texture and classic Eden acidity that keeps the rich fruit flavours fresh and balanced.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature (16-18°C) to showcase its complex aromatics of pomegranate, cherry molasses, and black pepper. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the rich, full-bodied structure to open up fully. The wine's silky tannins and balanced acidity make it perfect for pairing with grilled meats, aged cheeses, or hearty stews that can match its intensity.

The consistent 90-point scores across different categories - including 'Killer Vintage', 'Single Vineyard', and recognition as a 'Top Winery' - indicate exceptional quality across multiple dimensions. These ratings suggest the 2022 vintage was particularly successful, the single vineyard sourcing adds terroir specificity, and Sorby Adams' winemaking expertise is widely recognised. This convergence of high scores from various perspectives makes it a standout value proposition.

While this Shiraz is drinking beautifully now with its silky texture and balanced structure, Eden Valley Shiraz typically has excellent ageing potential due to its natural acidity and tannin structure. The 2022 vintage can be enjoyed immediately for its fresh fruit expression, or cellared for 8-12 years to develop more complex secondary flavours like leather, tobacco, and earthy notes that complement the existing spice and fruit characteristics.

The wine's combination of ripe plum fruit, black pepper spice, and blackcurrant intensity pairs beautifully with barbecued lamb, beef brisket, or venison where the char complements the spice notes. The blackcurrant and black olive flavours also work wonderfully with Mediterranean dishes featuring herbs like rosemary and thyme. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese where the wine's acidity cuts through rich, creamy textures.
