Why do we love this wine?

Known for producing some of the country's finest Shiraz (read: Hill of Grace), the Eden Valley area of Barossa is an incredible source of premium shiraz. The vineyards there seem to bear fruit worthy of royal status, it almost feels too good to drink. This premo shiraz shows immense complexity, with a nose of pomegranate and cherry molasses, black pepper and rip plums. The palate is silky smooth, rich and balanced with classic Eden acidity that keeps it all fresh and delightfully playful. This is a lot of shiraz, and a steal at the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Eden Valley sits at higher elevation within the Barossa region, creating cooler conditions that produce Shiraz with distinctive elegance and natural acidity. While lower Barossa Valley is known for powerful, rich styles, Eden Valley Shiraz like this St Hugh's bottling maintains intensity while showing more refined structure and fresh backbone. The cooler climate allows for longer ripening periods, developing complex aromatics like the pomegranate and black pepper notes found in this wine.

Serve this wine at cellar temperature around 16-18°C to showcase its silky texture and complex aromatics. Decant for 30-60 minutes before serving to allow the rich fruit flavours and spice elements to fully express themselves. The wine's natural acidity and balanced structure make it food-friendly despite its full body - pair with grilled meats, aged cheeses, or hearty Mediterranean dishes that can match its intensity.

The consistent 90-point scores across different categories - including 'Killer Vintage', 'Single Vineyard', and recognition as a 'Top Winery' - indicate this is an exceptional expression from an outstanding year. Single vineyard designation means the grapes come from one specific site, allowing the unique terroir characteristics to shine through. These ratings suggest the wine offers complexity and quality typically found in much more expensive bottles.

The 2022 vintage earned 'Killer Vintage' recognition, indicating ideal growing conditions that year in Eden Valley. Cool, wet winters followed by warm, dry summers typically create perfect ripening conditions for Shiraz, allowing development of intense fruit concentration while retaining natural acidity. This vintage timing explains the wine's remarkable balance between richness and freshness, with the classic Eden Valley acidity keeping the full-bodied style lively and age-worthy.

While Hill of Grace represents the pinnacle of Eden Valley Shiraz commanding premium prices, this St Hugh's bottling demonstrates that exceptional quality exists throughout the region at more accessible price points. Both wines share the signature Eden Valley characteristics of elegance, complexity, and natural acidity, but this offers similar terroir expression and varietal purity. The description noting it 'feels too good to drink' and is 'a steal at the price' suggests remarkable value for Eden Valley quality.
