The team aim for power with elegance. Maturation was for twelve months in a combination of French oak barriques and hogsheads. The colour here is a deep dark blood red. The aromas swirl through chocolate, spices, herbs, a hint of nutmeg, black fruits, cold tea and bergamot. Focused, with good length, it finishes with slightly grippy tannins. Enjoy any time over the next six to eight years.

Frequently Asked Questions

St Johns Road crafts this wine with accessibility in mind, creating a full-bodied Shiraz that doesn't intimidate or require special occasions. The Barossa Valley's warm climate naturally concentrates the blackberry and cherry flavours, while the producer's approachable winemaking style ensures it pairs effortlessly with weeknight meals. This philosophy of 'wine for the people' reflects a growing trend among Australian producers to make premium regional wines more approachable.

The 2021 vintage in Barossa was marked by cooler conditions that helped retain natural acidity while still achieving full ripeness. This balance is evident in the wine's ability to show both power and drinkability, with the spice notes providing structure alongside the rich fruit. The 90-point 'Killer Vintage' rating suggests this particular year produced exceptional fruit quality that translates into immediate enjoyment.

The rich blackberry and cherry core, enhanced by spice notes, makes this Shiraz incredibly versatile for hearty dishes. Think grilled meats, slow-cooked stews, or even pizza with robust toppings - the full-bodied structure won't be overwhelmed by bold flavours. The wine's approachable nature means it can handle both casual weeknight pasta dishes and more substantial weekend roasts with equal success.

Barossa's warm, dry climate and ancient soils create perfect conditions for Shiraz to develop intense fruit concentration while maintaining varietal character. The region's winemaking heritage, dating back to the 1840s, has refined techniques for producing full-bodied reds that balance power with elegance. This terroir naturally enhances the blackberry and spice characteristics that define quality Australian Shiraz.

The bold name reflects both the wine's deep colour and the producer's fearless approach to winemaking for everyday enjoyment. It suggests a wine with character and intensity, yet the description emphasises approachability over intimidation. This naming philosophy aligns with St Johns Road's mission to create wines that encourage regular consumption rather than cellar storage, embodying the courage to make wine accessible to all.
