Why do we love this wine?

Fast becoming our favourite southern Italian red, primitivo (often called zinfandel outside of italy) dishes up a bold and smooth flavour profile that's giving dinner party vibes. This wine hails from three generations of wine makers in the heart of Puglia, the spiritual home of primitivo, and when drinking this you'll be forgiven for dreaming of an Italian getaway. Our hot tip: grab a few bottles, whip out your best recipes, think spaghetti bolognese or eggplant parmigiana and get your friends around for aperitivo hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Primitivo is genetically identical to California's Zinfandel but expresses itself quite differently in its native Puglia. The warm Mediterranean climate and limestone-rich soils of southern Italy create wines with more structured tannins and earthy minerality compared to the fruit-forward American style. This particular expression showcases the variety's ability to balance power with elegance, making it more food-friendly than many New World interpretations.

Puglia's hot, dry climate and ancient soils provide ideal conditions for Primitivo to reach full phenolic ripeness while maintaining natural acidity. The region has been cultivating this variety for centuries, with traditional bush-vine training methods that concentrate flavours and protect grapes from intense sun. The Tagaro family's three-generation heritage represents this deep-rooted winemaking tradition that has perfected the art of expressing Primitivo's true character.

Luca Maroni is one of Italy's most respected wine critics, known for his rigorous technical analysis and focus on wine purity and balance. A 95-point score places this wine in the 'outstanding' category, indicating exceptional quality that rivals premium Italian reds. Maroni's scoring system particularly values wines that express their terroir authentically, suggesting this Primitivo perfectly captures the essence of Puglia's winemaking excellence.

Serve this full-bodied Primitivo at 16-18°C to allow its complex spice and fruit characteristics to fully develop. Decanting for 30-60 minutes will help soften the tannins and integrate the blackberry and plum flavours with the spice notes. The wine's bold profile makes it perfect for rich Italian dishes like osso buco or aged cheeses, where its structure can complement rather than overpower the food.

This 2023 Primitivo is drinking beautifully now, showcasing vibrant fruit and well-integrated tannins that make it perfect for immediate enjoyment. However, Primitivo's natural structure and acidity mean it can develop additional complexity over 3-5 years, with the spice notes becoming more pronounced and the fruit evolving into more savoury, earthy characteristics. For dinner parties, drink it now; for collectors, it will reward patience with increased depth and sophistication.
