This is Gamay with a bit of backbone - and we’re here for it. It’s deeper and darker than your average Aussie Gamay, but also more detailed, more boisterous perhaps. Plenty of complexity sure, but it's got that sheer drinkability that you get with even the most prestigious Beaujolais. An awesome wine.

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Sourced from three Mornington blocks, this one’s been treated with proper care: half the fruit destemmed, half kept as whole berries, then aged in French oak (20% new) before the final blend came together right before bottling. Thoughtful and deliberate, and it shows. The nose opens with spicy bergamot tea and bitter-sweet amaro vibes, before fresh cherry and a flicker of rosemary join the party. There’s real detail here - black cherry at the core, with hints of warm bitumen, sumac and liquorice root adding savoury depth. The palate builds beautifully. Lively, fleshy fruit up front, then structure kicks in - supple tannins, mouth-watering acidity and a savoury, spiced finish that gives it real shape. It’s elegant, sure, but there’s also grit and confidence underneath. Not just fun - properly complete. If you think Gamay can’t do serious, this one’s about to change your mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gamay is renowned for producing elegant, lighter-bodied wines with vibrant fruit flavours and lower tannins compared to varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz. This medium-bodied Verité Gamay showcases the grape's signature bright cherry, plum and raspberry characteristics. The variety's naturally high acidity and food-friendly nature make it incredibly versatile for pairing with everything from charcuterie to roasted poultry.

The Mornington Peninsula's cool maritime climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Gamay, which thrives in cooler regions. The peninsula's proximity to Port Phillip Bay moderates temperatures, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly while retaining their natural acidity and delicate fruit flavours. This terroir helps produce the elegant, lighter style that Gamay is celebrated for, rather than the heavier, jammy characteristics that can develop in warmer climates.

James Halliday's 5 Star rating represents the pinnacle of Australian winemaking excellence, awarded to fewer than 3% of wineries reviewed. This recognition indicates Verité consistently produces wines of exceptional quality across their range, with rigorous standards for vineyard management, winemaking technique and wine quality. The rating reflects not just individual wine scores, but the producer's overall commitment to excellence and track record of outstanding releases.

Serve this Gamay slightly chilled at 14-16°C to enhance its fresh fruit character and elegant structure. The wine's bright acidity and medium body make it exceptional with duck, salmon, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses like Gruyère. Its lighter tannin structure also makes it perfect for casual sipping or as an aperitif, bridging the gap between heavier reds and lighter whites.

As a young vintage, this 2024 Gamay will showcase vibrant primary fruit flavours of cherry, plum and raspberry at their peak freshness. Gamay is typically enjoyed young to capture its bright, juicy character, though quality examples can develop subtle earthy complexity over 3-5 years. The small batch production suggests careful attention to detail, likely resulting in concentrated flavours while maintaining the variety's characteristic elegance and drinkability.
