Why do we love this wine?

A boutique family-run winery sourcing top-tier fruit from standout Yarra Valley sites, Wheeler Wines are making serious noise with this expressive, small-batch pinot. This one hails from the revered Willowlake Vineyard in the Upper Yarra - it's all about volcanic soils, handpicked fruit, French oak and that wonderfully intangible 'pinosity'. It’s got all the hallmarks of premium single-site pinot, and then some. It’s complex and distinctive, brimming with personality and, most importantly, flavour. A pinot with edge, precision, and soul. Only limited cases made, so don’t sleep on this.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Willowlake Vineyard sits in the Upper Yarra Valley, where ancient volcanic soils create ideal drainage and mineral complexity that Pinot Noir craves. These elevated, cool-climate sites experience significant diurnal temperature variation, allowing the grapes to develop intense flavour while retaining natural acidity. The volcanic terroir imparts a distinctive mineral backbone that elevates this wine beyond typical regional expressions, contributing to what winemakers call 'pinosity' - that ineffable quality that defines truly great Pinot Noir.

French oak barrels are prized for Pinot Noir because they offer subtle, refined tannins without overwhelming the grape's delicate fruit character. Unlike American oak which can be more assertive, French oak allows the volcanic soil minerality and cherry-strawberry fruit to shine while adding gentle spice notes and textural complexity. The oak integration in this 2021 vintage creates a seamless marriage between fruit, earth, and wood that enhances rather than masks the wine's natural elegance.

Pinot Noir's thin skins make it extremely vulnerable to damage during harvest, and machine picking can easily crush berries and extract harsh tannins from stems and seeds. Hand-picking allows Wheeler Wines to select only perfectly ripe bunches while keeping berries intact, preserving the pure fruit flavours and preventing unwanted extraction. This meticulous approach is essential for achieving the precision and finesse that distinguishes single-vineyard Pinot Noir from mass-produced alternatives.

The wine's sour cherry and strawberry notes with underlying spice make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that won't overpower its elegant structure. Think roasted duck breast, mushroom risotto, or salmon with herbs where the wine's acidity can cut through richness while complementing earthy flavours. The volcanic minerality also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses or charcuterie, while the spice elements work wonderfully with Asian cuisine featuring five-spice or ginger.

Premium single-vineyard Pinot Noir from cool-climate regions like the Upper Yarra typically peaks between 5-8 years from vintage, though this wine is already showing beautifully now. The volcanic soil minerality and French oak structure provide a solid foundation for aging, allowing the sour cherry and strawberry flavours to evolve into more complex secondary characters. Given Wheeler Wines' small-batch approach and the wine's natural acidity, it should develop gracefully through 2028-2030, though its current vibrancy makes it equally rewarding to drink young.
