There's a reason Wolf Blass are so popular... After a well-planned stint in the cellar, this wine is sitting at a beautiful stage of its life - full of those delicious rich fruits, pepper, spice and chocolate, all slowly developing more decadence with each day of bottle age under cork. Old-school, traditional, mind-blowing.

Why do we love this wine?

It is no secret that we are big fans of McLaren Vale shiraz, so forgive us if we wax a little lyrical here and show a little bias. The grey label shiraz is an absolute stunner and exactly what we want when indulging in a shiraz from the 'Vale - plushness, with power, with richness, and at six years of age it is entering a beautiful drinking window. A window that you can be happy to pop open at your next family bbq, the in-laws will mark you down as their favourite, Dad will be nudging you every 20 mins for a top up, Mum will be telling everyone how thoughtful you are. Now, your siblings might be a little jealous, but you, you will be chuffed. Chuffed with your purchase and the other five bottles you've got stashed away.

Straight Shiraz from McLaren Vale and, in a fine vintage like 2018, this wine drinks well above its price. It is cracking value. The supple texture and lovely soft plushness here is a joy. Concentrated, sure, but gentle as well and lovely length too. It also offers the usual quality oak treatment one expects with any top of the line Blass wine with flavours of dark chocolate, mulberries, cloves, black cherries and more. Quite how Blass manage to walk the tightrope of full flavours and serious oak yet offer wines which seem so fresh and even elegant remains a mystery. Plenty of tannin but so soft as to be almost invisible. It has a good decade ahead – what is not to love?

Frequently Asked Questions

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create perfect conditions for Shiraz, producing wines with the signature combination of power and elegance found in this Grey Label. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent allow grapes to develop intense fruit flavors while maintaining natural acidity. This terroir expression is why McLaren Vale Shiraz consistently delivers the rich, full-bodied style that wine enthusiasts seek.

At six years old, this Shiraz has reached its optimal drinking window where the initial fruit intensity has evolved into more complex flavors while retaining its vibrant character. The tannins have softened and integrated beautifully, creating a smoother mouthfeel that enhances the blackberry, cherry, and mulberry notes. This maturation period allows the wine's full-bodied structure to showcase both power and finesse, making it perfect for immediate enjoyment or further cellaring.

This rich, powerful Shiraz excels with bold flavors that can match its intensity - think grilled red meats, barbecued lamb, or hearty stews. The wine's fruit-forward profile with blackberry and cherry notes complements smoky, charred flavors from the grill perfectly. For cheese pairings, try aged cheddar or blue cheese, while spiced dishes with pepper or herbs will harmonize beautifully with Shiraz's natural spice characteristics.

The 95-point Wine Pilot rating and Gold Medal from the Royal Perth Wine Show indicate exceptional winemaking and vintage quality that places this Shiraz among Australia's finest. Wolf Blass's Five Red Star Halliday rating reflects the winery's consistent excellence across their portfolio. These accolades suggest the wine demonstrates outstanding varietal character, regional expression, and technical precision that serious wine judges recognize as benchmark quality.

This 2018 Shiraz is perfectly positioned in its drinking window right now, offering immediate pleasure with its developed complexity and integrated tannins. However, quality McLaren Vale Shiraz like this can continue evolving for another 5-8 years, developing tertiary flavors of leather, earth, and spice. Whether you enjoy it tonight at a family gathering or cellar it for special occasions, you'll experience different but equally rewarding expressions of this exceptional vintage.
