This is Barossa shiraz with a refined edge. It’s generous and expressive from the first pour, with lifted florals, red berries, cracked black pepper and spice flowing through the aromatics and into the palate - juicy raspberry and forest fruits supported by clove, graphite and a touch of violet. Z Wines are making outstanding shiraz for fun these days...

Why do we love this wine?

Five generations of one family have tended this vineyard in Lyndoch in the Barossa. That’s pretty damn impressive. We’re talking near on 170 years. This meticulously cared-for wine sees two years in a mix of French and American oak, providing a cedary touch and tannins to with the sheer intensity of the fruit. The mulberry and plum is supported by liquorice, chocolate, violet and pepper, making for a complex and rich Barossa shiraz that could happily handle a few years in the cellar if you were so inclined.

" The Section 3146 title here honours the original southern Barossa property of the Zerk family, settled five generations ago and still under familial custodianship. Shiraz is undoubtedly the hero regional variety that can tell that story, speaking with a hearty mix of sweet plum and raspberry, crumbly soil and crushed kitchen herbs, bay leaf and ground pepper. Earth, fruit and spice - all the rustic regional pleasure in one glass, fleshy, chewy, sticky with a lip-smack of fresh, crimson berries in the finish. A wine that speaks truly of its home." - Tony Love

Frequently Asked Questions

This Lyndoch vineyard represents nearly 170 years of continuous family stewardship across five generations, making it one of the region's most historically significant properties. Such generational continuity is rare in modern winemaking and typically results in deep understanding of the terroir and meticulous vineyard management. The old vine designation suggests these Shiraz vines have developed complex root systems that access deeper soil layers, contributing to the wine's exceptional concentration and character.

The two-year maturation in a combination of French and American oak creates a sophisticated flavor profile that balances the intense Barossa fruit. French oak typically contributes more subtle, spicy notes and refined tannins, while American oak adds the cedary characteristics and vanilla undertones mentioned in the tasting notes. This extended aging period allows the oak to integrate seamlessly rather than dominate, creating the complex interplay of mulberry, plum, and those distinctive cedar notes.

A 'Dangerous Value' rating at 90 points indicates this wine delivers quality typically found in much more expensive bottles, making it a standout purchase in its price category. This designation suggests the wine punches well above its weight class, offering the complexity and craftsmanship of premium Barossa Shiraz without the premium price tag. For collectors and enthusiasts, these wines often represent the best opportunities to experience exceptional terroir-driven winemaking at accessible prices.

Given the full-bodied structure, old vine fruit concentration, and two years of oak aging, this Shiraz has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years from vintage. The 2023 vintage's 'Killer Vintage' rating suggests optimal growing conditions that typically produce wines with good aging structure. The combination of rich tannins, balanced acidity, and concentrated fruit flavors will allow the wine to develop additional complexity, with the primary fruit flavors evolving into more tertiary notes of leather, earth, and dried herbs over time.

The rich, full-bodied profile with notes of mulberry, chocolate, and pepper makes this Shiraz ideal for robust dishes that can match its intensity. Classic pairings include grilled red meats, lamb with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses, while the liquorice and spice elements complement game meats and dishes with Mediterranean herbs. The wine's structure and tannins will cut through rich, fatty foods, while its fruit concentration won't be overwhelmed by bold flavors like barbecue sauce or strong spices.
