This is very much a grower champagne- as rumour would have it Bernard is out hand picking the grapes at the winery just south of Reims during vintage. Lonclas carefully crafts the ever-enjoyable Selection Brut from a blend of 50% pinot meunier, 30% chardonnay, and 20% pinot noir.

Why do we love this wine?

Bernard Lonclas says “making champagne is more than just a trade, it’s a vocation - a calling, even”. We’re glad he’s decided making champagne is his calling, we didn’t know what we were missing until we got this in our glass. It's little wonder this champagne producer is fast becoming a 'Fo fave!

Frequently Asked Questions

The full-bodied character comes from extended lees ageing and careful blending techniques that create depth and richness. Unlike lighter champagnes that focus on crisp acidity, this style develops creamy textures and complex flavours like brioche and nuts. The weight on the palate makes it perfect for pairing with richer foods or enjoying as a standalone experience rather than just an aperitif.

Non-vintage champagne represents the house style through masterful blending of wines from multiple years, ensuring consistency and complexity. Bernard Lonclas uses this approach to create a signature flavour profile that showcases their winemaking philosophy. NV champagnes often offer better value than vintage releases while maintaining exceptional quality, as evidenced by the 90-point ratings from James Suckling.

The brioche and nutty characteristics make this champagne incredibly food-friendly, particularly with creamy dishes like lobster thermidor or mushroom risotto. The full-bodied nature can handle richer fare such as roasted chicken with herbs or aged cheeses like gruyere. These flavours also complement desserts featuring almonds or pastry, making it versatile throughout an entire meal.

Bernard Lonclas treats champagne making as a vocation rather than just business, which translates into meticulous attention to detail and traditional methods. This passionate approach likely involves longer fermentation periods and careful selection of base wines to achieve the complex, rich style. The resulting creamy texture and layered flavours reflect a producer who prioritises quality and character over mass production.

While Champagne is dominated by large houses, Bernard Lonclas represents the artisanal approach that's gaining recognition among wine enthusiasts. The 90-point professional ratings and strong Vivino scores demonstrate that smaller producers can compete with famous names through quality and distinctive style. The rich, complex profile offers something different from the typical crisp, light champagnes that flood the market.
