Sometimes you've just got to let the experts do the talking... "Aromas of roasted peanuts with orange-peel and apple undertones. Dried peaches and oranges. Full-bodied with layers of fruit and fine tannins in the complex and enticing palate. So much going on. 80% pinot meunier and 20% chardonnay." - James Suckling, 94pts.

Why do we love this wine?

The Cuvée Icône Brut Premier Cru is an otherworldly experience in and of itself - transcendent, multifaceted, layered champagne that takes you on a journey. Brioche and lemon drop flows into a creamy, prickly, energetic mouthfeel with piercing acidity in its slipstream. Limestone and chalky minerality give the wine drive and nuance throughout, and the fantail finish ties the wine up neatly. This is an excellent example of what the world's most revered wine postcode can produce.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Premier Cru champagne showcases the exceptional terroir of Champagne's chalky limestone soils, which impart the distinctive minerality and driving acidity that critics prize. The complex layering of brioche richness with bright citrus notes demonstrates masterful winemaking technique, while the extended lees contact creates that coveted creamy texture. James Suckling's 94-point score reflects how this cuvée captures the essence of what makes Champagne the world's most revered sparkling wine region.

Premier Cru status means the grapes come from villages officially recognised as producing superior quality fruit, ranking just below the elite Grand Cru sites. These vineyards benefit from optimal sun exposure and the region's prized chalky subsoil, which provides excellent drainage while retaining moisture. The classification system ensures consistent quality and explains the wine's impressive structure and mineral complexity. Only 42 villages in Champagne hold Premier Cru status, making this a genuinely premium expression.

The brioche and leesy characteristics make this champagne perfect for richer dishes that can match its full-bodied weight and complexity. Think lobster thermidor, aged cheeses like comté or gruyère, or even roasted chicken with herbs. The piercing acidity cuts through creamy sauces beautifully, while the mineral backbone provides enough structure to stand up to more substantial fare than typical lighter champagnes. The green apple notes also make it excellent with seafood preparations featuring citrus or apple elements.

Non-vintage champagne represents the house style through careful blending of wines from multiple years, allowing the winemaker to maintain consistency and complexity. Patrick Boivin uses reserve wines from previous harvests to create a more nuanced flavour profile than single-vintage expressions often achieve. This blending technique is actually considered an art form in Champagne, requiring deep knowledge of how different vineyard sites and years complement each other. The result is a champagne that showcases the producer's signature style rather than the characteristics of one particular growing season.

Serve this Premier Cru at 6-8°C in proper champagne flutes to concentrate the aromatics and preserve the fine mousse. The complex brioche and mineral notes need time to develop, so avoid over-chilling which can mute the nuanced flavours. Allow the wine to warm slightly in the glass to fully appreciate the layered complexity and creamy mouthfeel. Given its full-bodied nature and 'fantail finish', this champagne benefits from being savoured slowly rather than consumed as a quick aperitif.
