Tasmania makes some of the best riesling in the country. Bay of Fires make some of the best Riesling in Tasmania. You can do the maths. This is not an accident - it's what happens when exceptional cool-climate fruit meets a winemaking team that knows exactly what to do with it.

Why do we love this wine?

Fruit sourced from the Derwent and Coal River Valleys, two of the Apple Isle's most celebrated areas for white wine. In the glass it's fragrant and precise - fresh lime, musk, a flinty minerality and subtle florals that signal something refined before you've even taken a sip. The palate is juicy and energetic, brimming with citrus and that crisp, pebbly acidity that gives Tasmanian riesling its unmistakable tension and drive. The finish is long, clean and genuinely satisfying. Drink it now alongside freshly shucked oysters, kingfish sashimi or anything involving chilli and lime. Or tuck a few bottles away for the next 15 years and watch it become something quite extraordinary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tasmania's cool maritime climate and pristine environment create ideal conditions for Riesling, producing wines with exceptional purity and mineral precision. The island's latitude and ocean influence allow for slow, extended ripening that preserves the variety's signature acidity while developing complex aromatics. This Bay of Fires expression showcases Tasmania's ability to craft Rieslings that rival the world's best cool-climate regions, with a distinctive Australian character that balances fruit intensity with elegant restraint.

Serve well-chilled at 8-10°C in a tulip-shaped white wine glass to concentrate the aromatic profile of green apple, lemon zest, and white peach. The light body means it's perfect as an aperitif or paired with delicate dishes like fresh seafood, Asian cuisine, or soft cheeses. Consider decanting briefly if you want to open up the aromatics, though this wine is designed to be immediately approachable and refreshing.

The 96 points from Huon Hooke and 95 points from the Tasmanian Wine Show, plus a Gold medal, indicate this is an exceptional example of Australian Riesling. These scores place it in the top tier of local Rieslings, suggesting outstanding balance, complexity, and regional expression. Such recognition from respected critics and competitions confirms that Bay of Fires has crafted a wine that not only represents Tasmania beautifully but competes on the national stage.

While this 2024 Riesling is delicious now with its fresh fruit character and vibrant acidity, quality Rieslings often develop beautifully over 5-10 years. The variety's natural acidity acts as a preservative, allowing the wine to evolve from primary fruit flavours toward more complex honey, toast, and petrol notes that Riesling lovers prize. Given the exceptional ratings, this wine likely has the structure to reward patient cellaring, though it's equally rewarding for immediate consumption.

The bright acidity and fruit profile make this Riesling incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that echo its flavour spectrum. Try it with fresh oysters, grilled prawns, Thai green curry, or pork with apple sauce to create harmonious flavour bridges. The wine's light body and aromatic intensity also pair beautifully with spicy Asian cuisine, where the residual sweetness (if any) can balance heat while the acidity cuts through rich sauces.
