Why do we love this wine?

If there’s one thing we know, it’s that our Mofos love a little bit of Margaret River chardy. We’ll give you fair warning: this is not for the lovers of big and buttery. Don’t get us wrong, this goes some of the way there, seeing 9 months in partially new French oak and constant lees stirring (to get all that yeasty, toasty flavour). What is outstanding about this drop is the delightful acid line that cleans the palate in one foul swoop. Or should we say sip. Lemon, grapefruit, and minerality are the stars of the show, with a lingering touch of vanilla and almond. When you’re craving the lighter and the brighter, this is the one for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Chardonnay strikes a beautiful balance between richness and freshness, avoiding the heavily buttery profile many associate with oaked Chardonnay. While it sees 9 months in partially new French oak with lees stirring for complexity, the winemaker has preserved a vibrant acid line that keeps the wine clean and bright. The result showcases Margaret River's ability to produce Chardonnays with both texture and elegance, where citrus and mineral notes take centre stage rather than being overwhelmed by oak.

The 2019 vintage earned a 'Killer Vintage' rating, indicating exceptional growing conditions that year in Margaret River. This translates to concentrated fruit flavours and well-integrated oak, allowing the wine's natural acidity to shine through beautifully. Great vintages like 2019 often produce wines with better balance and aging potential, meaning this Chardonnay likely has several more years of drinking pleasure ahead while maintaining its fresh, mineral-driven character.

The wine's bright acidity and mineral backbone make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with seafood dishes like grilled fish, oysters, or lobster with light cream sauces. The subtle oak and lees contact add enough weight to handle roasted chicken or pork, while the citrus notes complement dishes with herbs like thyme or tarragon. Its clean finish also makes it excellent with soft cheeses or as an aperitif wine.

Margaret River's maritime climate provides the perfect conditions for elegant Chardonnay, with warm days for ripening and cool nights that preserve natural acidity. The region's ancient soils contribute to the mineral complexity evident in this wine, while the consistent ocean influence prevents the extreme heat that can lead to flabby, over-ripe styles. This terroir allows winemakers to craft Chardonnays with both power and finesse, explaining why Margaret River has earned international recognition for the variety.

Serve this Chardonnay well-chilled at 10-12°C to highlight its fresh acidity and citrus notes, though allowing it to warm slightly in the glass will reveal more of the oak-derived vanilla and almond complexity. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place away from temperature fluctuations. Given the 2019 vintage quality and balanced style, this wine should drink beautifully now but can develop additional complexity over the next 2-3 years if properly cellared.
