If you’ve been around here a while, you’ll know we’ve got a soft spot for this winemaker - Sam Brand - yep, that Brand family. When they make wine, good things to happen. It's that simple. Importantly, this one's just plain enjoyable. No need to swirl, squint or summon your inner wine academic. Get in the glass, get it in your mouth and get a big old smile going!

Why do we love this wine?

Out the gates with ripe pear, crunchy apple and a squeeze of citrus on the nose. The first sip is generous without being over the top - nashi pear, white melon maybe a touch of grapefruit rolling across the palate with a soft, rounded feel. It’s got that classic gris weight and texture, but it keeps itself in check. There’s freshness humming underneath, so it finishes clean and makes you want another glass rather than a lie down. It’s bright, it’s flavoursome, and it works just as well solo on the couch as it does next to a bowl of pasta, a roast chook or a spread of cheeses. Fun, balanced, and dangerously easy to like - exactly what good pinot gris should be.

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2025 vintage has earned a 'Killer Vintage' rating of 90 points, indicating exceptional growing conditions that year. South Australia experienced ideal weather patterns that allowed the Pinot Gris grapes to develop concentrated flavours while maintaining bright acidity. This combination of ripe fruit character with fresh citrus notes demonstrates how a great vintage can elevate a wine's natural varietal expression, creating that perfect balance between richness and drinkability.

This wine showcases the classic Alsatian-influenced Australian Pinot Gris style with its generous texture and weight, rather than the lighter Pinot Grigio approach. The nashi pear and white melon flavours are signature characteristics of quality Australian Pinot Gris, where warmer growing conditions develop more tropical fruit notes. The 'soft, rounded feel' mentioned reflects the variety's natural tendency towards a richer mouthfeel compared to other white wines, while still maintaining the freshness that prevents it from becoming heavy.

The wine's light-bodied nature and fresh acidity make it incredibly versatile for food matching. Its citrus and pear flavours complement creamy pasta dishes by cutting through richness, while the soft texture won't overpower delicate seafood or roast chicken. The balanced weight also makes it excellent with soft cheeses like brie or camembert, where the wine's fruit character enhances the creamy textures without competing with stronger flavoured hard cheeses.

Common Ground has earned 'Mofo Fav Producer' status with a 90-point rating, reflecting their consistent ability to craft wines that punch above their weight. Their approach focuses on expressing South Australian terroir through accessible, well-balanced wines that don't sacrifice quality for approachability. This philosophy is evident in how they've managed to create a Pinot Gris that maintains varietal character while being 'dangerously easy to like' - a hallmark of skilled winemaking.

The 'Dangerous Value' 90-point rating indicates this wine delivers quality that significantly exceeds its price point, making it almost too good to pass up. In wine terms, this suggests you're getting characteristics typically found in more expensive bottles - the complexity of flavours, balanced structure, and food-friendly nature. Such ratings often identify wines that offer restaurant-quality drinking at everyday prices, explaining why it's described as making you 'want another glass rather than a lie down'.
