Why do we love this wine?

Dry-farmed, biodynamically certified vines in Wilyabrup, some planted nearly five decades ago, tended with an obsessive commitment to place and purpose that shows in every single sip. No fining, no filtration, no additions. Indigenous yeast fermentation in concrete eggs, amphorae and biodynamic oak. Vanya Cullen has spent decades making this wine a reference point for Australian chardonnay and the 2024 vintage - Margaret River's hottest and driest on record - delivered something of extraordinary power and concentration. Stone fruit, chamomile, almond and white florals on the nose. The palate is layered and precise - peach, fig, Bosc pear and citrus stretched across taut, energetic lines with oak so perfectly absorbed you'd barely know it was there. Dense and crystalline at the same time. Which shouldn't be possible. And yet, here we are.

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine represents the pinnacle of biodynamic winemaking in Margaret River, with dry-farmed vines some nearly 50 years old and zero additions during production. The combination of concrete eggs, amphorae, and biodynamic oak creates extraordinary complexity while maintaining crystalline purity. Vanya Cullen's decades of refinement have created a reference point that challenges conventional Australian chardonnay styles through minimal intervention and obsessive attention to terroir expression.

The 2024 vintage was Margaret River's hottest and driest on record, which concentrated the fruit to extraordinary levels while maintaining the wine's signature elegance. These challenging conditions forced the old vines to dig deeper, resulting in exceptional power and mineral intensity. The stress actually enhanced the wine's ability to express its Wilyabrup terroir, creating what critics describe as dense yet crystalline - a seemingly impossible combination that showcases vintage adversity transformed into liquid gold.

The consistent 96-98 point scores from respected critics like Ray Jordan and Ken Gargett reflect this wine's rare combination of power, precision, and seamless oak integration. Critics recognise the extraordinary achievement of creating a full-bodied chardonnay that maintains energy and finesse despite its concentration. The wine's ability to express both immediate appeal and long-term ageing potential, combined with its pure expression of one of Australia's greatest chardonnay sites, places it among the country's finest examples.

The wine's full body and stone fruit complexity make it perfect for rich seafood like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with cauliflower puree. The subtle oak and creamy texture also pair beautifully with roasted chicken with herbs or pork tenderloin with apple compote. For cheese, try aged gruyere or triple cream brie, where the wine's acidity cuts through richness while its fruit flavours create harmonious bridges between the wine's mineral backbone and the food's umami elements.

Store this wine in a cool, dark place at 12-15°C, lying horizontally to keep the cork moist - though with its concentration and structure, it will reward cellaring for 8-12 years. Serve slightly chilled at 10-12°C in large burgundy glasses to allow the complex aromatics to develop fully. Decanting isn't necessary but allowing 30 minutes in the glass will reveal the wine's full spectrum of stone fruit, floral, and mineral notes as it warms and opens up.
