White peaches and unripe apricots leap out of the glass and lead to a palate that delicately walks the tight-rope between vibrance and texture. A medium-to-full-bodied white with hints of grapefruit and zesty acidity, there's plenty to unwrap here.

Why do we love this wine?

Matriach and Rogue owner and winemaker (and all round rockstar), Marnie Roberts, is a woman on a mission. She creates wines that are a tribute to her family and the 5 matriarchs, with 5 rogue husbands, that make it up. This fiano captures Marnie’s vibe perfectly but, more importantly, it captures the place from which it originates, the Clare Valley. Rich and round, there’s a reason people call fiano, “the red-drinker’s white”. There’s plenty of zip too! The combination of zesty citrus and richer stonefruit is what this wine is all about. That and food. This is a white you could comfortably drink with a steak.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fiano's reputation as 'the red-drinker's white' stems from its fuller body and textural richness that mirrors qualities typically found in red wines. Unlike lighter whites that can feel thin or overly crisp, fiano offers weight and substance on the palate, making it appealing to those who usually prefer reds. This Clare Valley example demonstrates this perfectly with its medium-bodied structure and rich stonefruit character that provides satisfying depth without sacrificing the freshness that defines quality white wine.

Clare Valley's continental climate and diverse soil types create perfect conditions for fiano to develop both intensity and elegance. The region's warm days allow the grapes to ripen fully, developing the rich stonefruit flavours, while cool nights preserve the zesty citrus acidity that gives the wine its backbone. This natural balance between warmth and coolness allows fiano to express both its Mediterranean heritage and Australian terroir, resulting in wines that are both food-friendly and cellar-worthy.

Absolutely - this fiano's medium body and textural richness make it surprisingly compatible with red meat dishes. The wine's substantial palate weight and spice elements can complement the umami flavours in grilled or pan-seared steak, while its citrus acidity cuts through rich fats. This pairing works particularly well with lighter preparations like herb-crusted steaks or those served with citrus-based sauces, showcasing fiano's versatility beyond traditional white wine pairings with seafood and poultry.

A textural wine style refers to wines that emphasise mouthfeel and weight rather than just flavour intensity. In this fiano, the textural quality comes from the grape's naturally thick skins and the winemaking techniques that extract more phenolic compounds, creating a wine that feels substantial and almost chewy on the palate. This texture adds complexity and drinking pleasure, making each sip more engaging than a simple, straightforward white wine, and contributing to its ability to pair with heartier dishes.

The interplay between zesty citrus and richer stonefruit creates a dynamic flavour profile that evolves as you drink. The citrus elements - likely lime and grapefruit notes - provide immediate freshness and acidity that awakens the palate, while the stonefruit flavours like peach and apricot add depth and sweetness that develops in the mid-palate. This combination ensures the wine remains lively and food-friendly while offering enough complexity to satisfy contemplative drinking, embodying the balance that makes quality fiano so distinctive.
