Why do we love this wine?

True leaders of the Australian wine industry: ranked and incredible #2 on Halliday's top 100 wineries. There is so much hype around the release of these wines, and the lofty standard has not only been met but exceeded with the 2024 vintage. Beautiful piercing citrus fruits at the fore by way of nectarine, lemon, grapefruit and zesty lime. That focus fans out into some more generous tropical styling and creamy palate breadth. Some maritime sea-spray through the finish adds savoury complexity. This is another knock-out release from Giant Steps, long may they reign.

Halliday Wine Companion

Halliday Wine Companion

An even split of upper and lower Yarra fruit; both estate grown and from growers. Less mlf than last year. Smells fleshy with aromas of stone fruits, together with a little pink grapefruit and light citrus notes. It's both approachable and gentle, even as a young wine, but the balance for drinking now or cellaring in the short to medium term is absolutely spot on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Giant Steps holds the prestigious #2 position on Halliday's Top 100 Wineries list and maintains a Five Red Star rating, placing them among Australia's elite producers. Their consistent excellence stems from their deep understanding of Yarra Valley terroir and meticulous winemaking approach. The winery has built a reputation for creating wines that perfectly balance power with finesse, generating significant anticipation with each vintage release.

The Yarra Valley's cool climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for elegant Chardonnay production, allowing for extended ripening periods that develop complex flavour profiles. The region's maritime influences contribute to the wine's distinctive sea-spray minerality and savoury complexity on the finish. This terroir enables the wine to achieve both the piercing citrus clarity and the generous tropical richness that defines premium Australian Chardonnay.

The wine's creamy texture and nutty characteristics make it exceptional with lobster thermidor, roasted chicken with herbs, or aged hard cheeses like vintage cheddar. The citrus acidity and maritime minerality complement fresh oysters and seared scallops beautifully. For vegetarian options, try it with mushroom risotto or roasted cauliflower with brown butter, where the wine's full body can match the dish's richness.

Serve this Chardonnay at 10-12°C to showcase its complex aromatics and balanced acidity without masking the subtle tropical and citrus nuances. While delicious now, the wine's structure and acidity suggest it will develop additional complexity over 3-5 years with proper cellaring. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place away from temperature fluctuations to preserve the wine's vibrant fruit character and elegant finish.

The 2024 vintage has exceeded even the lofty expectations set by Giant Steps' previous releases, earning an outstanding 95 points from Halliday Wine Companion. This vintage showcases exceptional balance between piercing citrus precision and generous tropical richness, with enhanced maritime complexity on the finish. The vintage conditions allowed for optimal flavour development while maintaining the bright acidity that gives this Chardonnay its distinctive character and ageing potential.
