Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

Philip Rich called this the most seductive and mouthwatering of the Yarra chardonnays he tried that year, which is saying something. You're getting ripe white peach and pear with a hint of sea breeze on the nose. The palate's textured but gentle, with a saline edge and structure that keeps everything in check. Finishes with energy, a nutty complexity and length for days. Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed, then straight into French oak barrels (mostly older, a splash of new) where it wild-fermented on full lees. A bit of stirring post-ferment, touch of malo to soften things, then nine months ageing to let it all come together. This is cool-climate chardonnay at its finest - pure, focused and seriously delicious.

Frequently Asked Questions

This represents the cool-climate Yarra Valley approach to Chardonnay, which contrasts sharply with warmer Australian regions that often produce richer, more tropical styles. The Sexton Vineyard's elevation and climate create wines with natural acidity and mineral complexity, while the restrained use of new oak (mostly older barrels) allows the fruit's purity to shine through. This style is closer to premium Burgundian expressions than the buttery, heavily oaked Chardonnays that dominated Australian wine in previous decades.

The consistent high scores (96-98 points) from diverse critics like James Suckling, Philip Rich, and Campbell Mattinson reflect the wine's technical excellence and stylistic balance. Critics particularly praised its combination of textural richness with bright acidity, plus the seamless integration of French oak maturation. The fact it made James Suckling's Top 100 Wines for 2024 demonstrates its international recognition, while Philip Rich's description as 'the most seductive' of Yarra Chardonnays that year shows its standout quality even within this prestigious region.

The hand-picking and whole bunch pressing preserve delicate aromatics, while wild fermentation in French oak adds complexity without overwhelming the fruit. Ageing on full lees with post-fermentation stirring creates the wine's signature textural richness, while partial malolactic fermentation softens the natural acidity without losing freshness. This traditional Burgundian approach, combined with nine months of careful oak maturation, develops the nutty complexity and saline minerality that distinguishes premium cool-climate Chardonnay from simpler styles.

The wine's full body and saline edge make it perfect for seafood with rich sauces - think lobster thermidor, pan-seared scallops, or grilled salmon with hollandaise. The nutty complexity and textural richness also pair beautifully with roasted chicken, creamy mushroom risotto, or aged hard cheeses like gruyere. The bright acidity cuts through rich dishes while the oak integration won't compete with delicate preparations, making it versatile enough for both casual dining and special occasions.

Premium Yarra Valley Chardonnays like this typically peak between 3-8 years from vintage, meaning this 2023 has excellent drinking potential through to 2031. The wine's natural acidity and quality oak integration provide the backbone for graceful ageing, where the current white peach and pear flavours will evolve into more complex honeyed and toasted nut characteristics. The saline minerality will become more pronounced with time, while the textural elements will integrate further, creating an even more sophisticated drinking experience for patient collectors.
