This one's from vines planted way back in 1969 - that puts this as one of the pioneering wines of the region and, unsurprisingly one that consistently defines each vintage - this is no exception. It's also handy that 2024 was an outrageous vintage in Margaret River. If you're a big Aussie chardonnay lover, this is the benchmark!

Why do we love this wine?

When Margaret River gets warm and stays dry, as it did in 2024, the chardonnay that comes out is seriously impressive. This is one of those vintages that'll be talked about for years. Ray Jordan gave it 97 points and called it "exceptional", fair enough, harsh if anything... You're getting lemon curd, briochey richness and a hint of florals on the nose. The palate's where it really shines - chalky texture, savoury edge, citrus brightness and vanillan oak, all held together by precise and enduring natural acidity that drives everything through to a finish that goes on and on and on and on and on. Delicate but powerful. Refined but intense. This is Margaret River chardonnay at it's very very best.

Ray Jordan

“One of Margaret River’s benchmark chardonnays, and this release from a warm vintage is exceptional. It’s fine and delicately poised, yet with regional DNA driving it through to a powerful, sustained finish. Aromas of lemon meringue, brioche and light florals lead into a palate of chalky, savoury elements alongside vanillin and lemony notes. Fine, precise acidity lifts the flavours through to the long finish. An outstanding wine. 97 Points.” - Ray Jordan

Frequently Asked Questions

The 2024 vintage benefited from ideal warm and dry conditions in Margaret River, creating what many consider an exceptional year that will be remembered for decades. These climatic conditions allowed the grapes to develop concentrated flavours while maintaining the natural acidity that Margaret River is famous for. The combination of extended ripening time and minimal disease pressure resulted in fruit with perfect balance between power and elegance.

Moss Wood employs traditional Burgundian techniques including partial malolactic fermentation and careful oak integration to create their signature style. The briochey richness comes from lees stirring and extended barrel ageing, while the chalky texture reflects their commitment to minimal intervention winemaking. This approach allows the Margaret River terroir to shine through while adding layers of complexity that develop beautifully with age.

The wine's savoury edge and chalky texture make it perfect for rich seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with cauliflower puree. The vanillan oak and citrus brightness also complement roasted chicken with herbs, creamy pasta dishes, and aged hard cheeses. The wine's natural acidity cuts through rich sauces while its full body stands up to substantial flavours without being overwhelmed.

With its exceptional vintage conditions and 97-point rating, this Chardonnay has excellent cellaring potential of 8-12 years. Over time, the citrus notes will develop into more complex honeyed and nutty characters, while the oak integration becomes more seamless. The wine's precise natural acidity acts as a preservative, ensuring the wine maintains freshness while gaining tertiary complexity including subtle spice and mineral notes.

Margaret River's unique maritime climate and ancient gravelly soils create Chardonnays with distinctive mineral complexity and natural acidity that many other Australian regions struggle to achieve. The region's consistent sea breezes moderate temperatures, allowing for extended ripening periods that develop flavour intensity while preserving freshness. This terroir produces wines that bridge the gap between Burgundian elegance and New World fruit expression, making them some of Australia's most food-friendly and age-worthy white wines.
