If you want great wine, you go to Ben Riggs. That's what most of McLaren Vale and surrounds would tell you, too. We pleaded for a small parcel of chardy, and we weren't disappointed with the result.

Why do we love this wine?

There's a very limited amount of chardy floating around the Adelaide Hills at the moment (and, in a lot of Australia for that matter), so we weren't holding our breath when we asked our Mofo favourite producer Mr Riggs for some. Sure enough, he managed to wrangle a small parcel to deliver us this unbelievably good drop. Saline and citrus driven, with a smattering of vanilla and nuts from some time in seasoned oak. You'd be surprised at how easily this drinks now, but will guarantee a few years of pleasure-filled drinking to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Adelaide Hills, like much of Australia, is experiencing a significant shortage of Chardonnay grapes, making quality examples increasingly rare. Climate challenges and vineyard management decisions have reduced yields across the region. Mr Riggs managed to secure only a small parcel for this release, which explains both its limited availability and exceptional quality - when fruit is scarce, only the best parcels make it to bottle.

The seasoned oak used here provides subtle vanilla and nutty complexity without overwhelming the wine's natural citrus and saline character. Seasoned barrels have been used multiple times, so they impart flavour more gently than new oak, allowing the Adelaide Hills terroir to shine through. This approach creates a more integrated, food-friendly style that drinks beautifully now while still having the structure to develop further complexity over time.

The Adelaide Hills' cool climate and elevation create ideal conditions for Chardonnay, producing wines with natural acidity and mineral complexity. The saline quality mentioned in this wine is characteristic of the region's unique soil composition and maritime influence. This terroir allows the variety to express both citrus freshness and textural richness, creating the perfect balance between elegance and substance that makes Adelaide Hills Chardonnay so distinctive.

This Chardonnay is beautifully balanced to offer immediate pleasure while having the structure for medium-term cellaring. The wine's natural acidity and oak integration suggest it will develop additional complexity over 3-5 years, with the citrus notes evolving into more honeyed, nutty characteristics. However, its current drinkability means you won't miss out by enjoying it now - consider buying multiple bottles if available to experience both its youthful vibrancy and aged development.

The medium body and oak influence make this perfect for richer seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops, where the wine's texture can match the food's richness. The saline and citrus elements also complement oysters beautifully, while the nutty oak notes pair excellently with roasted chicken or pork with herb crusts. The wine's balance means it can handle creamy pasta dishes or aged cheeses without being overwhelmed, making it versatile for both casual and formal dining.
