Pierro might just be the finest chardonnay producer in Australia. Everything is right where it should be, concentration, vibrance and, of course, a bit of grunt - very close to the perfect chardonnay (thus the 98pts)!

Why do we love this wine?

Pierro is an absolute icon and amongst the original founding wineries of the Margaret River region. Mike Peterkin, the founder and winemaker, has been producing one of the country’s (and possibly the world’s) best chardonnays since the 1980’s. This is Pierro chardonnay, already turned up to full bore in terms of concentration, complexity and intensity, and cranking it even further. This is rare stuff and certainly one for those that chase the pinnacle of Aussie chardonnay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pierro is one of Margaret River's founding wineries, with Mike Peterkin crafting what many consider among the world's finest Chardonnays since the 1980s. This 2024 vintage represents the pinnacle of Australian Chardonnay making, showcasing exceptional concentration and complexity that has earned consistent critical acclaim. The wine's full-bodied style with citrus, creamy, and vanilla notes reflects decades of refined winemaking expertise in one of Australia's most prestigious wine regions.

Serve this rich Chardonnay slightly chilled at 10-12°C to allow its complex flavours to fully express themselves. The wine's creamy texture and vanilla notes from oak aging make it perfect for pairing with lobster, roasted chicken, or creamy pasta dishes. Its citrus backbone provides enough acidity to cut through rich sauces, while the full-bodied weight can stand up to more substantial dishes than lighter Chardonnay styles.

Ray Jordan's 98-point rating places this Chardonnay in the exceptional category, representing near-perfect winemaking achievement. As one of Western Australia's most respected wine critics, Jordan's scoring reflects the wine's outstanding balance, complexity, and aging potential. This score positions the 2024 vintage among the finest Chardonnays produced not just in Margaret River, but globally, making it a serious collector's item.

Premium Margaret River Chardonnays like Pierro typically develop beautifully over 8-12 years when properly stored. Initially showing vibrant citrus and creamy oak integration, the wine will gradually develop more complex honeyed and nutty characteristics while maintaining its elegant structure. The wine's full-bodied nature and proven track record from this iconic producer suggest it will reward patient cellaring with increased depth and sophistication.

Margaret River's maritime climate provides the perfect balance of warm days and cool nights that Chardonnay needs to develop complexity while retaining natural acidity. The region's ancient soils and consistent growing conditions allow for extended hang time, developing the rich flavours and full-bodied character evident in this Pierro bottling. This unique terroir, combined with pioneering winemakers like Mike Peterkin, has established Margaret River as Australia's premier Chardonnay region.
