Pirramimma can't put a foot wrong. Full-bodied and fruit-focused with a super lengthy finish and a long life ahead of it. This is the kind of chardonnay everyone needs a case of in the cellar.

Why do we love this wine?

We don’t need to tell you about Pirramimma, do we? By now if you’re a regular of Vinomofo, we’re betting that you’ve tried a drop or two from this legendary winery. To say their red wines have been fan favourites would be to severely understate the cult following of this brand. Yes mofo, their white wines are truly as iconic as their reds. This is as abundant as you might expect (or crave), abound with notes of toast, crème brûlée, hazelnut and ripe peaches. If chardonnay is a red wine lover’s white, then this has got to be the one.

"The Heritage tag dates back to the 13th century and the early days of the family history. It is early days for this wine as well, of course, but 2024 is looking like another impressive vintage for McLaren Vale. Fermentation was with “a selection of French oak”. A gleaming yellow colour, we have attractive tropical notes here, delightfully fresh, with passionfruit and pineapple evident, along with a touch of stonefruits. There is a pleasing creamy texture and fine acidity through to a drying finish. A wine of medium length, we should see improvement over the next four to five years." - Ken Gargett

" A wine that provides compelling evidence that in the right conditions and year, McLaren Vale can turn out something special with a variety that it is not generally associated with. In this case a chardonnay. A little malolactic fermentation has brought texture and substance to the palate. White peach and melon with a subtle toasty background creates quite a wine for drinking in the short term. Cellar: 6 years" - Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot

Frequently Asked Questions

This Chardonnay showcases the textural, oak-influenced style that appeals to red wine enthusiasts through its medium body and complex flavour profile. The wine displays rich notes of toast, crème brûlée, and hazelnut from careful oak treatment, creating the weight and structure typically associated with red wines. McLaren Vale's warm climate allows the Chardonnay grapes to develop concentrated flavours while maintaining the variety's natural acidity, resulting in a wine that bridges the gap between white wine freshness and red wine complexity.

McLaren Vale's Mediterranean climate and diverse soils create ideal conditions for producing rich, textural Chardonnays with excellent fruit concentration. The region's warm days and cool sea breezes from the nearby Gulf St Vincent help maintain natural acidity while allowing full flavour development. This terroir contributes to the wine's ability to showcase both the ripe peach and melon characters alongside the more complex toast and spice notes, creating a Chardonnay with both power and elegance.

The wine's medium body and oak-influenced profile make it perfect for richer dishes that can match its intensity and complement its creamy, nutty characteristics. Consider pairing with roasted chicken with herbs, lobster thermidor, or creamy mushroom risotto to echo the wine's textural elements. The citrus and spice notes also work beautifully with Asian fusion cuisine, particularly dishes featuring coconut milk or mild curry spices, while the wine's structure can handle grilled fish with butter-based sauces.

The 2024 vintage in McLaren Vale benefited from excellent growing conditions that allowed Chardonnay grapes to achieve optimal ripeness while retaining crucial natural acidity. Cool nights during the ripening period helped preserve the citrus and melon freshness, while warm days concentrated the flavours that develop into the wine's signature toast and stone fruit characteristics. This balance between power and elegance is what defines exceptional Chardonnay vintages, allowing the wine to express both varietal purity and regional character.

Serve this Chardonnay at 10-12°C to best showcase its complex aromatics and textural elements - slightly warmer than typical white wines to allow the oak-derived flavours to fully express themselves. The wine benefits from decanting or at least 30 minutes of breathing time to open up its layered characteristics. Store bottles on their side in a cool, dark place, and while this wine is drinking beautifully now, its textural style and quality suggest it will develop additional complexity over the next 3-5 years.
