François Lequin tends his vines by hand, picks on acidity rather than sugar - the mark of someone who genuinely understands what makes great white Burgundy tick - and uses minimal oak to let the fruit do exactly what it wants. The grapes come from two exceptional sites: one in Santenay, one just below the hallowed slopes of Puligny-Montrachet. For a Bourgogne AOC, it rtruly doesn't get any better.

Why do we love this wine?

Fresh, citrusy and beautifully balanced - white peach, lemon zest and a clean mineral edge on the nose, with a palate that's crisp and lively but with just enough creamy texture from the barrel fermentation to give it real depth and interest. Noble Rot called it "exceptionally generous for the price" and took home Gold. We're not arguing. This is the Burgundy you open when you want something genuinely excellent without the Premier Cru price tag. Seafood, soft cheese, roast chicken - or just a quiet glass on its own because it's completely delicious. Smart value. Serious provenance. Outstanding chardonnay.

Frequently Asked Questions

This René Lequin-Colin represents classic Burgundian winemaking, where Chardonnay expresses terroir through mineral complexity and restrained elegance. Unlike many New World Chardonnays that emphasise tropical fruit, Burgundian examples like this showcase the limestone-rich soils through subtle oak integration and a more savoury, earthy character. The full-bodied nature suggests careful vineyard selection and traditional barrel fermentation techniques.

Serve this wine slightly chilled at 10-12°C to balance its rich, buttery character with refreshing acidity. The full body and oaky, toasty notes make it perfect for substantial dishes like roasted chicken, creamy seafood risotto, or aged hard cheeses. Allow it to breathe for 15-20 minutes after opening to fully appreciate the complex interplay between the oak and fruit elements.

The 2023 vintage in Burgundy was marked by challenging weather that required skilled winemaking, making producer selection crucial. René Lequin-Colin's expertise shines through in this vintage, creating a wine that balances the year's intensity with classic Burgundian finesse. Young Burgundian Chardonnays like this often show more pronounced oak initially, which will integrate beautifully over the next 2-3 years.

The buttery character comes from malolactic fermentation, a secondary process that converts sharp malic acid into softer lactic acid, creating that creamy mouthfeel. The toasty, oaky notes result from barrel ageing in French oak, where the wine absorbs vanilla and spice compounds from the wood. This combination is signature to quality Burgundian Chardonnay, where oak serves to enhance rather than dominate the wine's natural fruit character.

While this is the entry-level Bourgogne appellation, René Lequin-Colin's reputation suggests this wine has good ageing potential of 5-7 years. The full body and oak structure provide a framework for development, allowing the buttery richness to evolve into more complex honeyed and nutty flavours. Drink now for youthful exuberance, or cellar until 2028-2030 for maximum complexity and integration.
