Why do we love this wine?

An explosion of tropical fruit with the naunce of ripe peach following close by.There's real ripeness in play, too, which plays well with the creamy, full mouthfeel. All of that fruit is set against a bit of caramel or burnt butter, adding layers of complexity and nuance. A really clever wine - balanced, rich, peppy - an out-and-out pleasure to drink.

Subtle white florals, Lilies of the Valley, fennel and lemon verbena. Blue stone, running river and green apple curls. A yellow grapefruit citrus with white nectarine, longan fruit and self raising flour. There is an almond milk creaminess with greek yoghurt acidity and a gentle sway the mouthfeel. Oak is restrained instead letting the purity of citrus fruit take centre stage. It's an elegantly styled wine with the pristine feel of the Valley shining through. Delightful. Drink now and will cellar 2-5 years. A wine that would be sublime with a cauliflower cheese bake or equally an almond croissant.

The fruit for this wine has been sourced from a single site in Victoria’s King Valley. Attractively packaged, the wine offers a lovely gleaming pale gold hue. Lifted aromas here, white peaches, orange blossoms, citrus and a flick of cashews, indicating some judicious use of quality oak. Still very young, the wine is seamless, with a seductive texture and excellent length. Good balance. This will drink well over the next five to six years. Lots to like here.

A quite high-powered, richer style of Chardonnay, more in the honeydew melon to pineapple flavour spectrum, with a solid spine and background oak – but not overwhelmed – and an undercurrent of citrus in a tangelo kind of way rather than yellow or green fruit, balanced cleverly with a light creaminess in the palate, a cute little suggestion of toffee to boot. A fair bit going on within a traditional styling jacket.

Complex and refined, the wine shows ripe stone fruit, roasted hazelnut, subtle vanilla and oatmeal nuances on the nose. The palate displays elegance and fine flow, splendidly supported by bright acidity, finishing superbly long and engaging. It's expansive and harmonious, making it fabulously appealing.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Twin Valleys Reserve showcases the full-bodied style that King Valley does exceptionally well, combining tropical fruit intensity with sophisticated oak treatment. The burnt butter and caramel notes indicate careful barrel fermentation and lees stirring, techniques that create the creamy texture and add complexity beyond simple fruit flavours. At 94 points from multiple critics, it represents the premium end of Australian Chardonnay where winemaking skill transforms varietal character into something truly distinctive.

The 2023 vintage delivered ideal ripening conditions that allowed the tropical fruit characters to develop fully while maintaining natural acidity for balance. This 'killer vintage' designation reflects how the season's weather patterns in King Valley created wines with both power and finesse. The real ripeness mentioned in the tasting notes suggests perfect harvest timing, capturing maximum flavour development without losing the wine's structural integrity.

The creamy, full mouthfeel and caramel notes make this Chardonnay perfect for rich seafood dishes like lobster thermidor or pan-seared scallops with butter sauce. The tropical fruit backbone can handle spiced Asian cuisine, particularly Thai curries or Vietnamese dishes with coconut milk. The wine's complexity also pairs beautifully with roasted chicken, creamy pasta dishes, and aged hard cheeses where the nougat and peach flavours complement rather than compete.

Serve this Chardonnay at 10-12°C to showcase both its fruit intensity and creamy texture - too cold and you'll mute the complex flavours, too warm and it becomes flabby. While delicious now, the wine's structure and acidity suggest it will develop additional complexity over 3-5 years if stored properly in a cool, dark place. The full-bodied nature means it benefits from decanting or at least 30 minutes in the glass to fully express its layered character.

When critics label a wine 'dangerous value', they're highlighting exceptional quality at a price point that threatens more expensive competitors. This Twin Valleys Reserve delivers the complexity and craftsmanship typically found in premium Chardonnays costing significantly more. The combination of single vineyard fruit, boutique producer attention to detail, and outstanding vintage conditions creates a wine that punches well above its weight class, making it irresistible to savvy wine buyers.
