When pinot gris is done really well - like this - it's one of the most fun, most satisfying, food-friendly whites going around. Brilliant with a creamy mushroom pasta or anything from the sea. Or just on its own because it's Tuesday and you've earned it... we don't judge around here.

Why do we love this wine?

Yealands are a serious New Zealand producer, and their Seaview Vineyard in the Awatere Valley (Martinborough) is about as coastal as it gets - wild winds, rolling hills, small-batch, concentrated fruit with genuine character. That environment shows up in the glass every single time. This one is lush and generous without being heavy. Poached pear, melon and quince upfront, a little ginger spice adding some intrigue, and a mineral backbone keeping the whole thing honest. Full-bodied with real texture, but the acidity keeps it fresh and the finish is dry and stays with you for a very long time. This is honest, delicious pinot gris at a price that makes it a very easy yes...

Frequently Asked Questions

This wine showcases the unique terroir of Yealands' Seaview Vineyard in the Awatere Valley, where coastal winds and rolling hills create intense growing conditions. Unlike many commercial Pinot Gris that can be simple and one-dimensional, this wine develops genuine complexity through its challenging environment. The result is a wine with real texture and mineral backbone that distinguishes it from mass-produced alternatives, offering poached pear and quince flavours with an intriguing ginger spice element.

The Awatere Valley represents some of New Zealand's most extreme coastal viticulture, where wild winds and maritime influence create stress conditions that concentrate flavours in the grapes. This sub-region of Marlborough is cooler and windier than the main Wairau Valley, leading to longer ripening periods and more intense fruit character. The challenging environment forces vines to work harder, resulting in smaller berries with more concentrated flavours and natural acidity.

Serve this Pinot Gris well-chilled at 8-10°C to highlight its fresh acidity and mineral qualities. The wine's full-bodied texture and complex flavour profile make it ideal for pairing with richer dishes like roasted chicken, pork tenderloin, or creamy seafood pasta. Its dry finish and long persistence also make it excellent as an aperitif, where the ginger spice notes can be appreciated without food competition.

The 'dangerous value' rating indicates this wine delivers quality that significantly exceeds its price point, making it almost irresistible to wine lovers. This term is used when a wine offers complexity, character, and drinking pleasure typically found in much more expensive bottles. For this Pinot Gris, it means you're getting serious New Zealand winemaking expertise and distinctive terroir expression at a price that makes it accessible for everyday drinking rather than special occasions only.

While most Pinot Gris is designed for immediate consumption, this wine's mineral backbone and natural acidity suggest it could develop beautifully over 2-3 years. The 2024 vintage benefits from being very fresh, showing primary fruit flavours at their peak, but the wine's structure indicates it will gain complexity as the ginger spice elements integrate further. However, given its excellent current drinking quality and attractive price point, there's little reason to cellar it when it's so enjoyable now.
